How Can CSK Retain MS Dhoni as Uncapped Player in IPL?

Determined to Keep MS Dhoni CSK Awaits Release of IPL Retention Rules

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is eagerly awaiting the release of the IPL retention rules, as they are determined to keep for the upcoming season. ‘Thala’ Dhoni, who has been the face of CSK since the start of the IPL, holds immense value for the franchise both on and off the field. Despite rumors of his retirement, CSK is hopeful that Dhoni will continue playing for at least one more season, and they are prepared to make him one of their key retentions.

Recent information suggests that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may delay the release of the retention rules until the end of September, potentially around the time of the BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 29. While there is no direct connection between the AGM and IPL policies, this delay has left franchise officials, including those from CSK in anticipation. CSK like other franchises is waiting for clarity on the number of retentions allowed and any new rules that might impact their decision-making.

One significant policy that is being debated is the classification of retired international players as uncapped. While this rule may not be specifically designed to favor CSK or Dhoni, it could still play a role in retention decisions. However, CSK officials have made it clear that regardless of whether Dhoni is considered uncapped or not, they will retain him if he decides to continue playing. The potential change in rules is not likely to affect CSK’s intent to keep their former captain.

CSK’s management knows that Dhoni’s leadership and experience are invaluable. Beyond his performances on the field, Dhoni brings a sense of calm and strategy that has been a key part of CSK’s success over the years. Even if BCCI allows only two retentions, CSK is committed to making Dhoni one of them.

The expected retention deadline of November 15 gives CSK some time to finalize their decisions. With the IPL auction likely to take place in December, the franchise is keen to make strategic choices that ensure a strong squad. Although the Right to Match (RTM) option is expected to be part of the auction, retaining Dhoni is CSK’s priority.
