Donovan Ferreira Named JSK Captain, Leus du Plooy named replacement

Joburg Super Kings have acted decisively following the injury setback to Faf du Plessis, naming Donovan Ferreira as captain for the remainder of the SA20 campaign.

Du Plessis injured his thumb while fielding against MI Cape Town after jamming it into the ground while stopping a ball. The issue was serious enough to prevent him from holding the bat. Compounding the problem, he had already been managing an elbow injury sustained earlier in the season, making his absence unavoidable.

Donovan Ferreira to lead JSK in SA20

Donovan Ferreira’s rise to captaincy is backed not just by promise, but by performance. The 26-year-old has already been on fire this SA20 season, making a visible impact whenever he has walked out to bat. His standout knock came against Durban’s Super Giants, where he smashed 33 runs off just 10 balls, completely shifting momentum in JSK’s favour and underlining his value as a finisher.

Across recent SA20 seasons, Ferreira has built a reputation as one of JSK’s most explosive batters. He announced himself in the league with a memorable 82 off 40 balls on debut*, and since then has consistently operated at a strike rate well above 160, often batting in pressure situations. His ability to contribute across disciplines — including wicketkeeping and sharp fielding — has made him a genuine multi-dimensional asset.

Those numbers reflect a player already influencing games, not one learning on the job. With the captaincy now added, Ferreira has the platform to shape matches more consistently. For JSK, the hope is clear: leadership responsibility brings even greater clarity and composure to a batter already thriving under pressure.

Leus du Plooy Returns as Du Plessis’ Replacement

Joburg Super Kings have turned to a familiar face in Leus du Plooy to replace Faf du Plessis. Du Plooy previously represented JSK in SA20 and was among the more reliable performers during his stint with the franchise.

In his earlier season with the team, du Plooy scored over 300 runs, finishing as one of JSK’s top run-getters. He averaged above 30 and struck the ball at a rate close to 140, often providing stability at the top or through the middle order. His ability to adapt to different batting positions made him a key tactical option, especially when early wickets fell.

Beyond raw numbers, du Plooy brings tournament familiarity and calmness under pressure. He understands SA20 conditions and has previously delivered when the team needed partnerships rather than fireworks.

How Joburg Super Kings Could Line Up Going Forward

With Ferreira leading and du Plooy returning, JSK can rebalance their batting without drastic changes. Du Plooy batting at number three appears a natural fit, allowing him to steady the innings and rotate strike.

That move could open the door for Matthew de Villiers to return to the top of the order, injecting intent in the powerplay. Ferreira anchoring the middle order provides control and late-innings firepower. While losing Du Plessis is a setback, this reshaped lineup gives JSK a clear structure — and a chance to move forward with confidence.
