IPL 2026: Ayush Mhatre’s 73 in Vain as Bowling Collapse Hands CSK Another Defeat

Chennai Super Kings’ season just can’t seem to get going as they suffer yet another defeat. This time by the hands of Punjab Kings, at home.

The five times champions’ batting got going and they made a good total of 209 runs in the first innings, owing to a great inning by young sensation Ayush Mhatre.

Ayush Mhatre anchors CSK innings with a commanding 73

Ayush Mhatre played the defining knock of the innings, holding CSK together after an early setback and then shifting gears at the right time. Walking in after the early dismissal of Sanju Samson at 14/1, Mhatre had to first stabilize the innings, and he did so with calm intent.

He built his innings patiently in the initial phase, focusing on strike rotation and picking gaps rather than forcing shots. With Ruturaj Gaikwad at the other end, Mhatre ensured there was no further damage, guiding CSK through the powerplay and into the middle overs.

Once set, he began to open up. His acceleration came seamlessly, as he started targeting both pace and spin. Mhatre’s ability to clear the boundary stood out, as he struck 6 fours and 5 sixes in his knock of 73 off 43 balls, maintaining a strike rate of 169.77.

The most crucial phase of his innings came between overs 6 and 11, where he dominated the scoring and helped CSK move from 14/1 to 110/2. This shift in momentum laid the platform for a big total.

Even after Gaikwad’s dismissal, Mhatre continued to press on, ensuring the run rate never dipped. His innings combined control with aggression, making it the backbone of CSK’s 209/5.

It was not just about the runs, but the timing of them. Mhatre absorbed pressure early and then dictated terms, turning a cautious start into a commanding total.

Inexperienced bowling lets CSK down

CSK’s bowling lacked control and experience, and it showed throughout the chase. None of the bowlers managed to apply sustained pressure, with every option going at over nine runs per over. Matt Henry conceded 54 in 4 overs, while Anshul Kamboj went for 43 in 3.4 overs, highlighting the lack of control.

The biggest damage came from Priyansh Arya, who took the attack apart, scoring 55 runs in just 4 overs. CSK’s inability to contain him or pick early wickets meant the game slipped quickly, exposing their inexperience with the ball.
CSK will be keen to put this result behind them and return to winning ways quickly. With the season still in its early stages, they have time to regroup and fix their combinations. There is no bigger stage to bounce back than an away game, and facing Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Bengaluru offers them the perfect opportunity to reset and make a statement.
