Joburg Super Kings have added Matthew de Villiers to their squad for the upcoming SA20 season. He joins the team as a replacement for Brandon King, who was picked in the auction but has now been withdrawn. The reason for King’s replacement has not been disclosed yet.
De Villiers arrives as one of the most in-form batters in South African domestic cricket and brings strong recent numbers across formats. His call-up marks a big moment in his young career and gives JSK a player who has been rising fast through the system.
Why JSK Picked Matthew de Villiers?
De Villiers has been one of the standout performers of the CSA T20 Challenge. He scored 394 runs in 8 innings, averaging 65.66 at a strike rate of 141.21. He also hit five fifties and finished as the top run scorer in the tournament.
No batter matched his consistency or ability to hold an innings together. His highest score of 96 not out showed the kind of temperament that wins games. JSK needed a player who could arrive in form, and de Villiers checked every box.
A Background Built on Early Promise
Before turning professional, de Villiers built his game through years of heavy scoring in school and club cricket. He captained Wynberg Boys’ 1st XI, scored more than 1,500 runs in a UK league season, and followed it with big returns in the Netherlands and again in England.
In first-class cricket for the Warriors, he has 618 runs with a double century to his name. Everything about his journey points to a batter who knows how to adapt and grow.
Why Matthew de Villiers Fits Joburg Super Kings?
JSK’s batting needed stability in the middle order. They have hitters who can clear boundaries, but they lacked someone who can farm strike, rotate well, and steady the innings without slowing the scoring rate. De Villiers brings exactly that.
His T20 numbers show he scores quickly while still batting deep. His 50 fours and five sixes in just nine T20 games reflect smart, controlled batting rather than blind aggression. For a team that often loses momentum between overs 7 and 14, he offers balance. He can rebuild after early wickets, guide a chase, or launch late. De Villiers arrives as a dependable anchor who can hold JSK’s innings together when the game becomes chaotic.
The Season 4 of SA20 kicks off on 26th of December, with JSK playing their first ever game on 27th against Durban Super Giants.
