Despite playing through pain in subsequent games, scans later confirmed a fracture, forcing him out of the tournament. “Ruturaj tried to push through, but the injury was serious,” said head coach Stephen Fleming. “The initial X-ray didn’t show much, but the MRI revealed the extent of the damage.”

Fleming confirmed that Dhoni didn’t hesitate to step up. “MS knows the team needs him,” he said. “Rutu didn’t want to give up the role, but with this injury, there was no other option.” While Gaikwad’s absence leaves a gap at the top of the order, CSK will likely explore replacements from within the squad before looking externally.
Dhoni last led in the final of IPL 2023 but stepped aside before the first game of IPL 2024, handing over captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad.
