On Sunday ( 5th Nov) , India and South Africa clashed in their eighth match of the 2023 World Cup at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
India won the toss and chose to bat, and they started the match strongly, scoring 326 runs for the loss of five wickets. The star of the show was Virat Kohli, who performed admirably and scored 101 not out, his 49th ODI century. Other players, including Shreyas Iyer, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja, scored 77, 40, and 29* points, respectively. Keshav Maharaj, a South African bowler, took one wicket while conceding 30 runs.
Jadeja claims fifer against South Africa
India’s bowlers dominated South Africa in response, dismissing all of their batsmen for 83 runs. This outstanding performance followed a similar one against Sri Lanka, whom they dismissed for 55 runs. Jadeja was the standout performer, taking five wickets, while Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav each took two.
Ravindra Jadeja became the eighth Indian bowler to take five wickets in a single World Cup match. It’s interesting to note that the first Indian to achieve this feat was former captain Kapil Dev, way back in 1983, during a match against Australia in Nottingham.
Moreover, Mohammed Shami achieved a special record by becoming the only Indian bowler to take five wickets in a World Cup match on multiple occasions. He has done this three times, with two of those instances happening in the ongoing World Cup, against New Zealand and Sri Lanka.
