After a shaky run in the IPL 2025 so far, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have invited Mumbai’s 17-year-old cricketer, Ayush Mhatre, for a mid-season trial in IPL 2025. Notably, this isn’t the first time Mhatre has become the center of attraction. In November 2024, the Mumbai boy was invited by the Super Kings for the pre-season trials as well.
CSK’s managing director, Kasi Viswanathan, confirmed the news, mentioning that Mhatre had impressed their talent scouts. However, he also emphasized that this is only a trial and not a selection at this stage. “If there’s any need, we will consider it,” he said, making it clear that no players are being picked for the squad just yet.
How Ayush Mhatre Received the Opportunity?
Ayush Mhatre is a young right-handed batter from Mumbai. He made his domestic debut in the Irani Trophy last October, where he opened the innings with Prithvi Shaw and scored 19 runs. Ayush Mhatre was part of the star-studded Mumbai team led by Ajinkya Rahane, which also included prominent players like Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur, and Sarfaraz Khan. Mhatre’s journey in domestic cricket has been impressive so far, and his performances have caught the eye of CSK scouts.
Ayush Mhatre has already made a name for himself with some remarkable performances. He became the youngest batter to score more than 150 runs in List A cricket when he blasted 181 runs off 117 balls against Nagaland at the age of just 17 years and 291 days. In addition, he scored a half-century (52 from 71 balls) on his Ranji debut against Baroda.
Mhatre also made headlines when he scored 176 runs from 232 balls in a Ranji match against Maharashtra, a team captained by CSK’s Ruturaj Gaikwad. His performances continued to impress at the Under-19 Asia Cup 2024/25, where he scored 176 runs, the second-most runs for the Indian U19 team.
In List A cricket, Mhatre has also shown his bowling skills, taking 7 wickets. Notably, he dismissed India and Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma during his impressive outings.
CSK’s Run in IPL 2025 So Far
CSK started their IPL 2025 campaign with a big win against their arch-rivals, Mumbai Indians. However, things have since taken a turn for the worse. They lost two consecutive games in a span of just three days to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). As a result, CSK are currently 7th in the IPL points table, having won just one out of their three matches. On top of that, Super Kings is facing yet another injury scare, with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad probably sidelined for their next fixture.
With the team struggling, CSK will need to bounce back quickly, and the next match, against the unbeaten Delhi Capitals on Saturday, April 5, could be crucial for their campaign.
