Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed Gujarat wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel as a replacement for the injured Vansh Bedi for the remainder of IPL 2025. The 26-year-old Urvil joins the squad at his base price of INR 30 lakh, stepping in after Bedi was ruled out due to a ligament tear in his left ankle. Bedi, who was bought for INR 55 lakh at the IPL 2025 mega auction, hadn’t featured in a single match before picking up the injury.
Urvil’s selection comes after he attended CSK’s mid-season trials, along with 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre, following the injury to CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. Both players impressed during the trials, and now find themselves in the main squad, as CSK focuses on rebuilding for the future after being the first team eliminated from playoff contention this season.
Urvil Patel All Set to Join CSK for his Second Stint in IPL
This will be Urvil’s second experience in the IPL, having previously been part of the Gujarat Titans squad in IPL 2023. However, he is yet to make his debut in the tournament. Despite being uncapped in the IPL, Urvil has made a name for himself in domestic cricket, especially with his explosive performances in the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
During that tournament, Urvil was in red-hot form, scoring 315 runs in just six innings. He averaged 78.75 and struck at an incredible strike rate of nearly 230. His standout performance came against Tripura in Indore, where he smashed a 28-ball century—the joint second-fastest hundred in T20 history. His consistent six-hitting made him the tournament’s top six-hitter with 29 maximums, outperforming the likes of Rajat Patidar, who had 27 sixes in ten games.
In addition to his T20 success, Urvil has also delivered in red-ball cricket. He scored a career-best 140 off 197 balls in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Saurashtra earlier this year, showcasing his versatility across formats.
CSK is expected to use its final three matches of the season to test emerging talents like Urvil Patel and Ayush Mhatre, as they prepare for a fresh start in the next IPL season. With strong domestic form and big-hitting ability, Urvil now has the opportunity to prove himself on the biggest stage.
