The day amassed a staggering 12,760 million minutes of watch time, encompassing the glitzy opening ceremony and a high-profile clash between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. A remarkable 168 million unique viewers tuned in to watch the broadcast, with 61 million viewers watching simultaneously.
Disney Star attributed this unprecedented viewership to the unfiltered captain’s version, where eight out of the ten captains revealed their raw emotions, adding a unique layer of engagement. The opening day’s record-breaking TV viewership followed an impressive lead-up to the 17th season, which garnered over 245 million unique viewers leading up to the tournament.
In comparison, JioCinema, the official digital broadcaster, reported 113 million viewers on the first day of the IPL. The streaming platform noted a significant 51% increase over the viewership from IPL 2023, accumulating a total watch time of 6,600 million minutes on day one. This surge in digital viewership reflects the growing popularity and widespread accessibility of live sports streaming platforms.
CSK vs RCB: Chennai’s young guns steal the show in IPL 2024 opening match
In their IPL 2024 opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai Super Kings clinched a clinical chase against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Cameron Green’s two wickets caused a slight hiccup, but Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja’s composed partnership guided CSK to victory.
Earlier, contributions from Dinesh Karthik and Anuj Rawat propelled RCB to 173/6 after Faf du Plessis chose to bat first. Mustafizur Rahman starred for CSK with four wickets. The match spotlighted MS Dhoni, who had relinquished CSK’s captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Virat Kohli, aiming for a spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad. Kohli managed only a 20-ball 21 in the match.
