Why Is Dewald Brevis Called Baby AB? Ex-Mumbai Indians Player Joins CSK Squad in IPL 2025

Dewald Brevis Joins CSK as Replacement for Injured Gurjapneet

Chennai Super Kings’ batting has been struggling this season, and they might have received the best boost out there, which is in the form of Dewald Brevis.

Yes, the five-time champions have announced the signing of the player, often dubbed Baby AB (after AB de Villiers). Chennai Super Kings has confirmed this development through a social media post they shared on their official Instagram handle.

Dewald Brevis to join CSK as injury replacement

According to ESPNcricinfo, the South African player will replace Gurjapneet Singh, who was ruled out of the IPL 2025 following an injury. Brevis will join CSK for INR 2.2 crore.

This is not the first time that Brevis will partake in the IPL. He had a taste of the league when he played for Mumbai Indians between the 2022-24 season. However, when he entered the mega auction for a base price of 75 crores, he was overlooked by every team.

Now, Brevis has found a new home in the marquee league, but it is with a team that is a direct rival to the Mumbai Indians.

Brevis has impressed everyone with his clean hitting. He has played in 82 T20 games and scored 1787 runs at a strike rate of 144, with 162 being his highest score in an inning.

Brevis has been in great form recently. Earlier in the year, he was one of the highest run scorers in the SA20 tournament, where he smashed 291 runs for his side, MI Cape Town, in 12 games at an average of 48.5 and a strike rate of 184.

Apart from that, he also showcased good form in the domestic tournaments in South Africa. Playing for Titans, he finished as the second-highest run-getter in both the one-day and the first-class tournaments.

Why is Brevis a good fit for CSK?

Throughout the IPL 2025, the batting of Chennai Super Kings has been criticized for their lack of intent. And that is exactly what Brevis brings to this team.

Known as a fearless hitter, the batter has an uncanny ability of hitting the ball in all parts of the ground. Making him a 360-degree player. Hence, when those middle overs arrive for CSK, they would want someone like Brevis to just get them a move on by scoring runs at a quick rate.

So far, CSK has only managed to register two wins from seven games. Owing to this, they find themselves at the bottom of the table, a position one seldom associates with them.

However, the team desperately needs change, and Brevis can bring just that. Earlier, in their game against Lucknow Super Giants, the team handed a debut to youngster Shaik Rasheed, who also gave the team a fresh breath by scoring quickly upfront.

Chennai also suffered a major blow to their campaign when their captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, was ruled out of the tournament following a fractured elbow. This left the team under the leadership of MS Dhoni once again.

With just 7 games to go, CSK now cannot afford to lose any more games. Only a string of victories can keep them alive in this tournament, otherwise, they face the threat of becoming the first team to be ousted from the Playoff race.
