Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time IPL champions, have been dealt another blow in a challenging 2025 season. The team has signed South African youngster Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh, adding to their growing list of injury setbacks. Brevis joins the franchise as their second replacement signing this season, stepping in after CSK confirmed that an overseas slot was still available in their squad.
Gurjapneet Singh’s injury adds to CSK’s woes, with the young pacer being ruled out for the remainder of the tournament. To make matters worse, CSK’s skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was recently ruled out due to an elbow fracture. In the wake of his injury, CSK made the emotional decision to reinstate the legendary MS Dhoni as captain. While fans were thrilled to see Dhoni back at the helm, the team continues to struggle with form and fitness issues.
Gurjapneet Singh Injury Makes Way for “Baby AB” For Remainder Of IPL 2025
The Chennai-based franchise ropes in Brevis, offering him INR 2.2 crore, significantly above his auction base price of INR 75 lakh. The South African batter, who previously played for Mumbai Indians, has featured in 81 T20 matches across various leagues, boasting an impressive strike rate close to 145.
Brevis played for MI during the 2022 to 2024 IPL seasons, scoring 230 runs in 10 matches at an average of 23. While his performances were modest, CSK saw potential in his recent domestic form. The 21-year-old was in sublime touch for his domestic side Titans, and his consistent run-scoring in both List A and first-class formats earned him a call-up. His notable showing in the SA20 league earlier this year further solidified his reputation as one of South Africa’s brightest young talents.
CSK ‘Happily’ Welcomes the South African Batter
The announcement was made via CSK’s official ‘X’ handle (formerly Twitter), as fans welcomed the dynamic right-hander to the Yellow Army. However, the signing comes amid a turbulent phase for CSK. The franchise is currently placed 10th on the IPL 2025 points table, managing just two wins in their first seven matches.
Notably, the Super Kings have struggled with poor batting, especially in the middle order. The signing of Dewald Brevis, a fearless 360-degree batter will boost their middle-order scoring.
CSK needs a strong winning streak in their remaining seven matches to stay in the playoff race. Youngster Shaik Rasheed also impressed on debut. The team hopes Brevis brings the energy and intent they’ve been missing so far this season.
