Mahendra Singh Dhoni, one of India’s most iconic cricketers, recently shared his honest thoughts on social media and public relations ( widely known as ‘PR’). Despite being a hugely popular figure, Dhoni has always maintained a subtle distance from social media platforms like X and Instagram. Notably, his last Instagram post was in July 2024, and he hasn’t been active since. Despite that, netizens keep picking on him for having a strong “PR” team and claiming that his team’s efforts make him famous ignoring all the greats of Thala Dhoni.

The former Indian skipper revealed that throughout his career, many managers encouraged him to build his online presence. However, Dhoni firmly believed that good cricket speaks louder than PR. “I have never been a big fan of social media. Throughout, I have had so many managers and all of them keep pushing. I started playing in 2004; Twitter got popular later on, after which Instagram came in. All the managers told me, ‘you should do some PR, build this and build that’. I had the same answer that if you play good cricket, you don’t need PR,” Dhoni said during the Eurogrip Tred Talks.
Why MS Dhoni Never Really Needed ‘PR’ for his Popularity?
Dhoni’s cricketing career, which began in 2004, is nothing short of legendary. As India’s captain, he achieved unparalleled success. He remains the only captain in history to win all three ICC limited-overs trophies: the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy. In Test cricket, he led India in 60 matches, securing 27 wins and taking the team to the top of the ICC Test Rankings. Dhoni also captained India in 200 ODIs, with a win percentage of 55%, and 74 T20Is, winning 41 games with a win rate of 58.33%.
Now 43 years old, Dhoni is set to return to action in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The franchise retained him for INR 4 crore under the new uncapped player rule. Dhoni will once again play for CSK side in a season that is considered to be his last. CSK has also retained key players like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja, both valued at INR 18 crore, along with Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana.
Dhoni’s decision to avoid social media and focus on his game reflects his no-nonsense approach to life and cricket. His accomplishments, both on and off the field, continue to inspire millions. As he gears up for another IPL season, fans are excited to see their beloved “Thala” back in action, leading CSK in their signature yellow jersey but not officially as a captain.
