Latest JSK Squad Updates

JSK is entering a new phase for the 2027 SA20, with Albie Morkel replacing Stephen Fleming as head coach and several key players released after the fourth season. The franchise also has the league’s largest auction purse, signalling a major recruitment push before the new season.

Joburg Super Kings have made one of the clearest changes among the SA20 teams by parting ways with long-time head coach Stephen Fleming and appointing former South African all-rounder Albie Morkel. The change comes as JSK prepares for a new era ahead of its fifth SA20 campaign.

Several significant moves have reshaped the JSK squad. Faf du Plessis, who captained the side in Season 4, was released at the end of the campaign and is now available at the auction. Wiaan Mulder, the costliest buy in the last season, was also released ahead of the 2027 SA20 auction. In contrast, Jason Holder was pre-signed, adding an experienced overseas all-rounder to JSK’s squad for 2027.

Therefore, JSK’s recruitment strategy is centred on rebuilding rather than simply carrying the previous squad forward. The franchise enters the Season 5 Player Auction with the largest purse, giving Morkel and the team management considerable room to revamp the squad. With the auction scheduled for 7 October 2026, 156 players have been shortlisted out of 789 applications.

The overseas market is also expected to be important. As the auction shortlist includes experienced international players, JSK has a great opportunity to address gaps with proven T20 options.

For now, treat the confirmed squad as the list of players announced before the auction. JSK is not yet at its final 2027 squad strength, so the auction will be the key point for tracking further signings and changes. The official SA20 schedule confirms that the fifth season begins in January 2027, making the auction an important step in shaping the franchise’s final squad.

JSK Retained and Released Players

Joburg Super Kings have retained their core group for SA20 2027, covering batting, wicketkeeping, all-round and spin-bowling options. The retained players provide continuity, while several notable departures create space to strengthen the squad through the auction.

JSK retained Jarren Bacher, Matthew de Villiers, Leus du Plooy, Donovan Ferreira, Dian Forrester, Duan Jansen, Rilee Rossouw, Janco Smit and Prenelan Subrayen from the previous season.

Notable releases from JSK last season include Faf du Plessis, Wiaan Mulder, and Nandre Burger. Other players released from the previous season include Daniel Worrall, Reece Topley, Imran Tahir, Rivaldo Moonsamy, Neil Timmers, Jorich van Schalkwyk, Steve Stolk, Shubham Ranjane, Brandon King, Michael Pepper and Richard Gleeson.

The departures leave gaps in captaincy, top-order batting and fast bowling, giving JSK opportunities to address these areas through the auction.

JSK New Signings and Auction Buys

Jason Holder is the only confirmed new buy for the Joburg Super Kings ahead of SA20 2027, joining as a pre-signing rather than an auction purchase. The West Indies lad brings valuable all-round experience and strengthens the squad’s balance. JSK pre-signed Akeal Hosein and James Vince after they were part of the squad last season. JSK still has six auction slots with R20.6 million available in hand, while the wildcard signing will be made separately. JSK can use the auction to address the gaps created by the released players, particularly in captaincy, top-order batting and fast bowling.

How the JSK Squad Fits Together

JSK’s squad has several batting combinations available, with Leus du Plooy, Rilee Rossouw and James Vince providing established options. Matthew de Villiers and Donovan Ferreira provide wicketkeeping cover, while the latter also offers a finishing option. Dian Forrester and Jason Holder add all-round flexibility.

The bowling group currently includes Akeal Hosein and Prenelan Subrayen for spin, alongside Duan Jansen and Janco Smit for pace. Holder and Forrester also provide seam-bowling options, along with the power-hitting calibre. Leus du Plooy’s decision to recommit to South African cricket gives JSK a massive squad advantage. By relinquishing his local status in English county cricket and committing to his own country, he frees up a crucial foreign-player slot.

The main remaining gaps are captaincy, top-order batting and additional fast bowling following the departures of many players from the previous season, especially Faf du Plessis, Wiann Mulder and Nandre Burger. JSK also has seven squad positions to fill before the final 19-player squad is complete, including a wildcard slot.
