But that leads to a much bigger question: who leads CSK into the future?
Replacing Fleming will be no easy task. He spent 18 years building one of the most successful teams in IPL history and became synonymous with the franchise. Several names could emerge as possible successors, but few can match his understanding of the CSK system.
Unless, of course, the franchise turns to someone who helped build that system alongside him.
Someone who hasn’t even officially retired from the IPL yet.
Yes, we are talking about MS Dhoni.
Why MS Dhoni Makes Sense as CSK Head Coach
Much of what CSK have achieved in their nearly two-decade-long history stems from the partnership between MS Dhoni and Stephen Fleming.
Fleming shaped the team from the dugout. Dhoni led it on the field. Together, they built one of the most successful franchises in cricket.
That is why Dhoni taking over as head coach feels like a natural progression. He understands how CSK operate because he helped establish many of the principles on which the franchise still stands today.
More importantly, Dhoni knows how to turn those principles into results. He has already led players through pressure situations, defined roles and extracted performances from unlikely match-winners.
If Dhoni takes over, it would feel less like a transition and more like an evolution.
Dhoni Has Already Been a Coach on the Field
Everyone knows the master tactician that MS Dhoni is. He has long been regarded as one of the sharpest cricketing minds of his generation.
As captain, Dhoni built his reputation on reading batters and reacting before they could take control. From identifying weaknesses to setting unconventional fields and knowing exactly when to turn to a particular bowler, he often changed games through decisions alone.
His reading of conditions was equally impressive. The 2014 Lord’s Test remains a famous example, with India successfully turning to the short ball against England on the final day.
Then comes his relationship with players. Numerous bowlers have spoken highly of playing under Dhoni, particularly spinners who benefited from his guidance behind the stumps.
In many ways, Dhoni has already been coaching from the field for years.
Does Dhoni Want the Job?
In many ways, MS Dhoni looks like the ideal candidate to become CSK’s next head coach. But there is one question nobody can answer yet: does he even want the job?
Dhoni has largely stayed away from formal coaching roles since retiring from international cricket in 2020. His most notable non-playing role came when he joined India as a mentor for the 2021 T20 World Cup. Since then, he has not taken up a permanent coaching position.
That makes his appointment difficult to predict. An IPL head coach must remain involved beyond matchdays, contributing to recruitment, auctions, player development and season-long preparation.
Dhoni may have the cricketing brain for the job. The bigger question is whether he wants the responsibility that comes with it.
Could Dhoni Replace Stephen Fleming?
Replacing Stephen Fleming requires more than finding an experienced coach. CSK need someone who understands the culture he helped build.
Michael Hussey may offer continuity, while other candidates could bring greater coaching experience, but nobody knows CSK quite like MS Dhoni.
He helped shape the franchise alongside Fleming and understands what makes the system work. That makes him perhaps the most natural successor available.
Ultimately, everything comes down to one question: does Dhoni want the responsibility? If the answer is yes, CSK may already have Fleming’s successor sitting in their dressing room.
