Mumbai Indians are turning to one of their most iconic figures to lead their next chapter, appointing Kieron Pollard as head coach ahead of IPL 2027. The move comes following Mahela Jayawardene’s recent departure with the franchise.
From winning matches for MI on the field to guiding the five-time champions from the dugout, Kieron Pollard is now set to begin a new chapter in his long-standing association with the franchise.
Kieron Pollard’s Connection With MI
Kieron Pollard, renowned for his excellent all-round skills, has been part of Mumbai Indians since 2010. Across 189 matches for the franchise, he scored 3,412 runs and picked 69 wickets. He has delivered many match-winning performances in nail-biting situations, making him one of the most prominent figures in the team’s history.
After his final appearance as an MI player in 2022, Pollard transitioned into the coaching setup and served as the franchise’s batting coach. That experience has now led to his elevation as head coach, placing him in charge following Jayawardene’s recent exit. Beyond the Indian Premier League, he has also played for Mumbai Indians’ sister franchises across various T20 leagues, strengthening his connection with the wider MI network.
Speaking about the appointment, owner Nita Ambani praised the West Indies legend’s contribution and commitment to the franchise. She expressed confidence that the qualities which made him excel as a player would help him shine as a coach, too. Her endorsement reflects MI’s belief that his familiarity with the team, its expectations and its winning culture can help guide the side into the 2027 season. .
Pollard’s Appointment: A Massive Advantage for Mumbai Indians
Although Pollard has been away from the Indian Premier League as a player for several years, he remains active across global T20 competitions. This year, he featured for Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League and MI New York in MLC. Recently, he was signed by Joburg Super Kings ahead of the 2027 SA20 season.
Such continued playing experience could give the West Indies legend a coaching edge. Staying active provides match practice and a dual perspective, as experiencing contests from the middle offers empathy and a better understanding of players’ difficulties, helping him develop realistic strategies from the sidelines.
Moreover, his journey with Mumbai Indians, dating back to 2010 across playing and support-staff roles, means he understands the franchise’s culture, standards and demands. Together, all these factors could benefit MI as they prepare for the upcoming IPL season. December brings his first major assignment, when he will help finalise retentions ahead of the mini-auction.
