Our first target will be women’s cricket: CEO Kasi Vishwanathan on CSK’s WPL Team

The long wait for a Women’s Premier League team from Chennai Super Kings might finally be nearing its end. One of the most iconic franchises in Indian cricket appears ready to take its next big step, with strong indications that CSK could soon launch a WPL team. For years, fans have wondered when the yellow jersey would make its way into women’s cricket, and that moment may now be closer than ever.

CSK have built a reputation for patience and long-term planning rather than rushing into decisions. That same approach seems to have guided their WPL thinking, but recent developments suggest the franchise is now actively preparing for entry into the women’s league.

A Franchise Built Across Leagues, But Missing One Piece

At present, CSK operate three teams across major leagues. They run the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, Joburg Super Kings in SA20, and Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket. While this global footprint has expanded steadily, the absence of a WPL team has stood out.

The Women’s Premier League has grown rapidly in popularity and quality since its inception, and CSK fans have consistently voiced their desire to see the franchise enter the competition. Given CSK’s strong brand value and loyal fanbase, many believe a WPL team carrying the Super Kings identity would instantly become one of the league’s biggest draws.

CEO Confirms WPL Is High on CSK’s Agenda

That belief gained momentum after CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan addressed the subject in a recent interview. Viswanathan made it clear that owning a WPL franchise is not just an idea, but a priority. He said the franchise’s “first target” is to participate in the WPL and confirmed that discussions are ongoing, adding that it is “something very much on our agenda.”

His comments signal a shift from speculation to intent. While no official timeline has been announced, the message was clear: CSK want to be part of the WPL ecosystem and are actively exploring the right opportunity to enter.

Why is there no CSK WPL team?

CSK’s delayed entry into the WPL has largely been down to their commitment to Joburg Super Kings. Managing multiple teams across leagues requires significant operational focus, and the franchise has previously prioritised stabilising JSK in SA20 before expanding further. With JSK now firmly established, CSK appear more comfortable widening their portfolio.

Currently, CSK remain one of the franchises yet to invest in the WPL, alongside Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Lucknow Super Giants. However, with the WPL’s popularity soaring, that list is unlikely to remain unchanged for long.

If CSK do take the plunge, it could significantly reshape the league’s dynamics. For now, the signs point strongly in one direction — the Super Kings’ yellow may soon shine in the WPL as well.
