Rinku Singh Shares MS Dhoni Advice That Helped Him Rescue India After Top-order Collapse against Bangladesh

Rinku Singh holds a separate fanbase for his forgetful nature, forgetting advice given by legends of the game like MS Dhoni. However, he was in exceptional form during India’s dominant win over Bangladesh in the second T20I of their three-match series, held in New Delhi on Wednesday. The hosts secured an impressive 86-run victory to clinch the series 2-0, showcasing strong performances in both batting and bowling.

Batting first, India posted a formidable total of 221/9 in 20 overs, thanks to stellar half-centuries from Nitish Kumar Reddy and Rinku Singh. Nitish, who batted at number four, was awarded the Player of the Match for his explosive 74 off 34 balls, featuring four boundaries and seven sixes. Rinku provided solid support with his own impressive innings, scoring 53 runs from 29 deliveries, which included five fours and three sixes. Together, they forged a 108-run partnership in just 49 balls, setting up a challenging target for Bangladesh.

Chasing 222, Bangladesh was held to 135/9 in their 20 overs, with Varun Chakravarthy and Nitish Kumar Reddy each claiming two wickets. The Indian bowlers kept up the pressure, making it difficult for Bangladesh to build any momentum. This all-around performance marked India’s dominance in New Delhi.

Following the match, Rinku Singh shared insights into his approach to the game. He credited his experience with red-ball cricket as a key factor in his recent success, explaining, “I love playing with the red ball. The way I batted today is similar to how I approach my role in domestic games, coming in at 5-6 when wickets fall. I back myself and focus on getting runs for the team, especially in tough situations.”

Rinku also praised Nitish for his intelligent batting, noting that a no-ball turned into a free hit for Nitish, who smashed it for six, significantly boosting his confidence. “He batted with great intelligence,” Rinku shared. “We enjoyed the partnership, and I told him, ‘It’s God’s plan, keep hitting.’ We just focused on staying positive and playing our game.”

Reflecting on his approach to the future, Rinku mentioned that he no longer tries to overthink his game. “Earlier, I started thinking too much, and things weren’t going well. So now, I focus on the present and try not to look too far ahead,” he said.

Rinku also spoke about his conversations with MS Dhoni, who has been a valuable mentor. “I’ve been talking to Mahi Bhai (Dhoni), and he’s been very helpful. He gave me advice on what a batter should do if the team loses early wickets. I’ve taken this advice to heart, as I’ve encountered similar situations with India, my IPL team, and my state team.”

With a strong first-class record, Rinku has scored 3,179 runs in 48 matches for Uttar Pradesh, boasting an impressive average of 53.88, along with seven centuries and 20 half-centuries.
