Ruturaj Gaikwad Named ROI Team Captain for Irani Trophy 2023-24

The Rest of India (ROI) squad for the upcoming Irani Trophy 2023-24 was announced on Tuesday, with Ruturaj Gaikwad appointed as the captain. The ROI team will face Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai in the prestigious Irani Trophy, which is scheduled to take place from October 1 to October 5. The match will see some of India’s most promising cricketers competing on a major domestic stage.

Among the notable names in the squad are Dhruv Jurel and Yash Dayal, both of whom are currently part of the Indian squad for the ongoing Test series against Bangladesh. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that both players will join the ROI squad if they are not selected for the playing XI in the second Test match, which begins on September 27 in Kanpur. “Dhruv Jurel and Yash Dayal have been selected in the Rest of India squad, and their participation is subject to them not being involved in the second Test match against Bangladesh in Kanpur,” stated the BCCI.

Irani Trophy 2023-24: Ruturaj Gaikwad Set to Lead ROI squad with Abhimanyu Easwaran as his Deputy

The ROI squad has a balanced mix of young talent and experienced players. Aside from Gaikwad’s leadership, Easwaran has been named vice-captain, adding further strength to the team. Other players in the squad include Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, wicketkeepers Ishan Kishan and Dhruv Jurel, and fast bowlers Prasidh Krishna and Mukesh Kumar.

Meanwhile, Mumbai’s squad will feature key players such as all-rounder Shardul Thakur, veteran batsman Ajinkya Rahane, and Shreyas Iyer. Thakur, who underwent foot surgery in June and has since recovered, will be playing his first domestic match following the injury, which had resurfaced during India’s tour of South Africa earlier this year. His return is expected to bolster Mumbai’s chances in the tournament.

The Irani Trophy, a historic fixture in Indian domestic cricket, puts the reigning Ranji Trophy champions against the Rest of India squad. This year’s clash between Mumbai and ROI promises to be an exciting encounter, with both teams fielding strong line-ups.

The full Rest of India squad is as follows: Ruturaj Gaikwad (captain), Abhimanyu Easwaran (vice-captain), Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Manav Suthar, Saransh Jain, Prasidh Krishna, Mukesh Kumar, Yash Dayal, Ricky Bhui, Shashwat Rawat, Khaleel Ahmed, and Rahul Chahar.
