CSK’s Urvil Patel has had a great start to the new season of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The CSK opener and Gujarat’s captain smashed the third fastest century by an Indian in the history of T20 cricket.
Urvil Patel, who opened the batting for Gujarat against Services, scored a magnificent inning of 119 runs from just 37 balls, to help his side record an easy win in a Group C fixture.
Urvil Patel smash third fastest century
However, in doing so, he smashed a century in just 31 balls, the third-fastest in T20S. In his entire inning, Urvil smashed 12 fours and 10 sixes, as his side cruised past Services with 45 balls to spare.
What’s really interesting is the fact that Urvil Patel also holds the record for the fastest century by an Indian in T20S. This record, the player smashed in last year’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, against Tripura. Many claim it was an eye-opener knock for teams who overlooked his potential just days before in the IPL Mega Auction.
He also holds the record for the third fastest century in List A cricket, with a scintillating knock of 100 runs in 41 balls against Arunachal Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Urvil Patel CSK stats
Urvil Patel became one of the most significant mid-season stories for Chennai Super Kings after joining the franchise as an injury replacement for Vansh Bedi, who was ruled out with an ankle ligament tear. Patel arrived with strong domestic form behind him, including a magnificent knock in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and carried that confidence straight into the IPL.
Across his three appearances for CSK, he scored 68 runs at a strike rate above 200, showcasing rare aggression at the top. His 31 on debut at No. 3 set the tone, while a rapid 37 off 19 balls later in the season reinforced his ability to influence games in short bursts. Despite limited opportunities, his impact was immediate, giving CSK a dynamic middle-order option when they needed it most.
His performances convinced the franchise to retain him ahead of the upcoming auction, a sign of the long-term value they see in his profile. With Sanju Samson now strengthening CSK’s batting core, Patel’s explosiveness and wicket-keeping utility offer tactical flexibility.
In other games, Sanju Samson of CSK, who will join the team next season, also smashed a fifty. Samson was part of a great victory Kerala pulled off against Orissa in their season opener as well.
While chasing the total of 176, Samson opened the inning with Rohan Kunnumal and scored 51 runs in 41 balls with the help of 3 fours and 1 six as well.
