In recent updates, the trade of Washington Sundar to the Chennai Super Kings is off. Earlier reported as a high possibility, the rumour has culminated in nothing, as both teams look for different options.
The IPL trade window is harsh and cruel. Just as in the football world, there have been several rumours about CSK in recent times, and many of them have been dashed. Washington Sundar’s move to CSK has become the most recent prey to this whirlwind.
Washington Sundar Trade to CSK Reportedly Falls Through
Earlier reports suggested that Washington Sundar could move from the Gujarat Titans to the Chennai Super Kings. Now it lost steam, with no concrete developments emerging between the two franchises.
According to Cricbuzz, there has been “no traction” on the trade, despite early speculation that CSK were targeting the all-rounder as a replacement for the recently retired Ravichandran Ashwin.
No Movement Between Franchises
While initial chatter hinted at Sundar’s homecoming to Chennai, both teams have reportedly not held any serious discussions. Gujarat Titans, who signed Sundar for ₹3.2 crore in the 2025 auction, are said to be unwilling to release him, given his growing importance in both domestic and international cricket. The 25-year-old featured in limited games last season but remains a valuable squad member due to his balance as a spin-bowling all-rounder.
Some reports even claimed that the final decision rested in the hands of Ashish Nehra, the head coach. And he was strongly opposed to letting Sundar go. He was even quoted as saying that, although they underutilised the player in the last season, they had invested a lot in his development and could not let someone else reap the fruits of their labour.
For CSK, the move would have fit their ongoing transition toward younger Indian talent following Ashwin’s exit. Sundar’s ability to bowl in power plays and add depth with the bat made him an ideal candidate.
However, with talks going nowhere, the proposed deal appears to have collapsed. Unless either side reopens discussions, this rumoured trade remains just that — speculation with no official confirmation.
