The following over saw another setback for Durban Super Giants as JJ Smuts was dismissed lbw by Lizaad Williams, further deepening their predicament at 34-4 by the seventh over. Despite the early challenges, Super Giants, who had previously scored an impressive 225-3 in their last match against Sunrisers Eastern Cape, continue their strong performance in the competition with two wins from two matches. Shepherd’s extraordinary catch undoubtedly added a memorable highlight to their campaign.

SA20 2024 Match 7: Durban Super Giants beat Joburg Super Kings by 37 runs

Durban’s Super Giants continued their impressive run in Betway SA20 Season 2 with a commanding 37-run triumph over Joburg Super Kings, solidifying their position at the top of the standings on Monday evening.

In a match characterized by a modest total at Kingsmead, Heinrich Klaasen’s brilliant innings of 64 off 41 balls (7×4, 2×6) emerged as the pivotal factor for the Super Giants. Their total of 145/8 also earned them a bonus point for their efforts.

Klaasen played a crucial role in holding the Super Giants’ innings together, overcoming the resilient bowling unit of Joburg Super Kings, which had shown character to bounce back from their previous defeat. Lizaad Williams spearheaded the bowling effort with figures of 4/26, while Nandre Burger contributed with a notable spell of 1/22, displaying a marked improvement from his previous performance.

The spin duo of Moeen Ali (1/14) and Imran Tahir (1/9) further contributed, collectively achieving figures of 2/23 from their four overs.

A standout moment came from Romario Shepherd’s exceptional athleticism, as he executed a magnificent one-handed catch to dismiss Matthew Breetzke, showcasing Caribbean flair on the field.

Durban’s Super Giants exhibited adaptability, introducing Jon-Jon Smuts’ left-arm spin into the attack after assessing the conditions during the break. Captain Keshav Maharaj, bowling in his home conditions, made a significant impact by dismissing Super Kings’ captain Faf du Plessis and later clean bowling Ronan Herrmann with a well-executed reverse sweep.

The Super Kings, struggling at 108, failed to recover from the early setbacks, with only Reeza Hendricks (38) and Moeen Ali (36) offering resistance. DSG seamers Richard Gleeson (2/22) and Reece Topley (3/19) played crucial roles in wrapping up the Super Kings’ innings.

The victory for Durban’s Super Giants marked the perfect farewell for Nicholas Pooran, concluding his explosive three-match stint in Betway SA20. On the other hand, the winless Super Kings face a quick turnaround with just two days to recover before their next encounter against the unbeaten Paarl Royals at Boland Park on Wednesday.
