Can CSK Release Prashant Veer Ahead of IPL 2027?

Can CSK release Prashant Veer ahead of IPL 2027? They can, and after one quiet season, there is a fair case that they should.

Chennai made the Uttar Pradesh all-rounder the joint-costliest uncapped Indian in IPL history at ₹14.2 crore, then watched him finish IPL 2026 with 90 runs and two overs that went for 25. With his name on several reported release lists, the question at the Den is simple: keep paying for the promise, or reset the price?

Why Did CSK Spend ₹14.2 Crore on Prashant Veer?

The Jadeja trade explains most of it. Ravindra Jadeja’s move to Rajasthan Royals in the Sanju Samson deal cost CSK the man who did three jobs at No. 7 for a decade. CEO Kasi Viswanathan said the scouts had Veer as their top pick for that slot.

The domestic numbers backed them: 320 runs at a strike rate above 155 in the 2025 UP T20 League with eight wickets, and a strike rate of around 170 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Stephen Fleming framed the auction as CSK looking to the future, so Veer was a development signing at a first-team price. The fair test is whether he showed signs of growing into Jadeja’s role, not whether he matched him.

How Did Prashant Veer Perform in IPL 2026?

Batting

Prashant Veer’s IPL 2026 performance with the bat came in small doses. He played six games but batted only five times, scoring 90 runs off 67 balls at a strike rate of 134.32, with ten fours and three sixes. Three innings ended unbeaten, so his 45.00 average reflects late entries.

His 43 off 29 at Bengaluru needs context. Chasing 251, CSK were five down when he walked in inside ten overs, and 109/6 at halfway, needing 142 off 60. He added more than 50 with Jamie Overton, and his boundary-heavy 14th over was his best passage of the season. But when Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed him at the start of the 16th, CSK still needed 86 off 30. The knock shrank the margin of defeat; it never revived the chase.

Still, he did not freeze with the rate above 14. The rest were cameos, starting with 6 not out on debut at No. 7. A mid-130s strike rate does not make a finisher, but 67 balls cannot rule him out.

Bowling

Two overs, 25 runs, no wickets, all in one appearance out of six.

That points to tactics, not form. CSK did not bowl him in his first two games, before he had bowled an IPL ball. Defending 209 against Punjab, they watched the target go in 18.4 overs without turning to him, which R Ashwin publicly questioned. At Bengaluru, S Badrinath noted Veer had replaced Overton, a genuine bowler, and still got no over.

Once Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein formed a working spin pair, room shrank further. An economy of 12.50 from 12 balls proves nothing; his bowling is unproven, not failed. The worry is that a management unwilling to bowl him while losing games was not yet seeing an all-rounder.

Prashant Veer vs Kartik Sharma: Who Offered Better Value for CSK?

In Prashant Veer vs Kartik Sharma, the telling number barely differs: both struck in the mid-130s. The gap is volume. Kartik faced 216 balls to Veer’s 67 and made two fifties, including an unbeaten one in the Mumbai chase and a 42-ball 71 at Lucknow.

Kartik also started poorly, with 58 runs in his first five innings, before settling at No. 4. A specialist batter gets a fixed slot and time; Veer’s place depends on the XI’s balance.

Kartik had the better season without fully repaying his fee, but he showed a big uncapped buy can work when the role is clear. That makes Veer’s fee harder to defend.

Where Does Prashant Veer Fit Into CSK’s IPL 2027 Plans?

Spin is the barrier. Noor leads, Hosein bowls the same left-arm spin and bats lower down, and Rahul Chahar and Shreyas Gopal sit behind them. Overton brings seam, and Shivam Dube finishes.

Hosein, though, is an overseas player, and that is Veer’s selling point. CSK’s 2026 overseas quartet usually featured Dewald Brevis, Noor, Hosein and Overton or Matt Henry. Veer at No. 7 for Hosein keeps the left-arm spin and hitting while opening a slot for a second overseas seamer: Henry, Nathan Ellis, Spencer Johnson or a new signing. That targets CSK’s biggest problem, after Henry went at 11.52 an over and Khaleel Ahmed’s season ended with a quadriceps tear.

The catch: the plan needs four overs a game from Veer, and his IPL evidence is two. Drop the dependable Hosein, and the fifth bowler’s overs could fall on Dube or a part-timer. Picked only as a batter, Veer loses the No. 7 race to Overton, who also bowls seam. He helps the XI only if he bowls.

With Fleming gone in July and Zaheer Khan in charge since September, a new set-up will decide what Prashant Veer’s IPL 2027 looks like.

What Could CSK Gain by Releasing Prashant Veer?

There is no fixed retention limit before a mini-auction, so CSK can keep him. The purse says they might not. According to Cricbuzz, CSK have ₹2.4 crore left, rising to ₹7.4 crore after the annual ₹5 crore increase. Releasing Veer alone makes it ₹21.6 crore for the CSK auction 2027 in Goa on December 16, enough to chase a frontline overseas quick and an Indian death bowler instead of shopping for depth.

So, can CSK release Prashant Veer and still end up with him? The obvious plan is to release and rebid lower. But Right to Match cards are not available at mini-auctions, and Sunrisers Hyderabad pushed CSK hard for him last December. A release would judge the contract, not the cricketer.

A failed buy-back is the real risk. CSK would lose the Indian left-arm spin all-rounder this plan depends on, pushing the role back onto Hosein’s overseas slot. Nor would a substitute be cheap: two uncapped Indians fetched ₹14.2 crore each last December because so few exist. Chasing Veer or a replacement could swallow most of the money meant for bowling. The one comfort: this is the cycle’s final mini-auction before the 2028 mega auction, so any December deal covers one season.

Why CSK Should Consider Retaining Prashant Veer

Veer is still 20, and 67 balls plus 12 deliveries is no basis for judgement. His record elsewhere argues better.

With the ball, his calling card is control: 12 T20 wickets at an economy of 6.45 before the auction, and under seven an over in the 2025 UPT20. In an era of 200-plus totals, that is what CSK paid for. With the bat, he averaged 64 in that UPT20 season, and the form has held. Captaining Noida Kings in the 2026 UPT20 eliminator, he made an unbeaten 58 off 28 balls and took two wickets to win Player of the Match.

That is a cricketer who can do both jobs. Indian left-arm spinners who bat with power seldom reach the auction pool, and cutting him now risks another franchise finishing the development Chennai paid for.

Conclusion: Should CSK Release Prashant Veer Ahead of IPL 2027?

Has Veer shown the potential that drew CSK in? In flashes; the Bengaluru 43 and his domestic form suggest the hitting is real, but his bowling went untested. Has he justified his fee? No, though limited use explains some of that. Would releasing him strengthen CSK’s options? Clearly; the squad needs bowling more than projects.

Can CSK release Prashant Veer and come out stronger? Our verdict is yes: release him and try to buy him back. Without RTM, that is a gamble, but keeping him at a price his first season never approached is a bigger one. Until the CSK retention 2027 list lands on November 15, every report remains just that, a report.
