CSK Set to Release Prashant Veer Ahead of IPL 2027 Auction

Chennai Super Kings could be preparing for a major call ahead of the IPL 2027 mini auction, with all-rounder Prashant Veer reportedly facing an uncertain future. Despite arriving with a hefty price tag and a lot of expectations, his disappointing first season has raised questions.

The franchise could consider a difficult call to revamp its squad, while freeing valuable funds to address key weaknesses and build a stronger unit.

Why CSK Looks to Release Prashant Veer?

When CSK signed Prashant Veer for INR 14.2 crore at the IPL 2026 auction, expectations were understandably high. However, the 20-year-old left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder from Uttar Pradesh did not quite deliver value for money, scoring just 90 runs in six games without taking a wicket.

Although judging a player so early in his career may be unfair, franchises must make decisions that serve the team’s larger interests. CSK has struggled to build a settled, balanced squad, and another season of underperformance could put further pressure on the team.

With the men in yellow aiming for a strong comeback after missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, strengthening key areas will be crucial. Releasing Veer could therefore turn out to be a difficult but practical option if the Chennai Super Kings believe the funds can be used more effectively elsewhere. Ultimately, the franchise must prioritize balance, impact, and long-term team-building before making its final call on the youngster carefully.

How Chennai Super Kings Might Benefit From Releasing Veer?

At present, the five-time champions have 2.4 crores remaining in their purse, while an annual increase of 5 in the salary cap could take their auction budget to 7. Trading Veer, signed for INR 14.2 crore, would add that amount to their available funds and lift the projected purse to 21. Such flexibility could help the franchise address areas of improvement before the IPL 2027 mini auction.

Importantly, CSK also bought another rising talent, Kartik Sharma, for INR 14.2 crore in the previous year’s IPL auction, and his 295 runs in 11 matches, including two fifties, could strengthen his case for retention. Consequently, Veer’s position may become more uncertain. Moreover, Chennai Super Kings need an explosive finisher who can eventually take over from MS Dhoni.

They must also add greater depth to their bowling attack. Addressing these needs with a larger purse could give the management more room to rebuild a mightier squad. That financial room may prove decisive in fixing weaknesses without compromising the team’s long-term plans for a serious title challenge in 2027 overall. A clever auction strategy could help CSK assemble a well-balanced unit capable of challenging the strongest sides in the upcoming season.
