During the IPL 2025 Mega Auction in Jeddah, Chennai Super Kings secured the services of R Ashwin for INR 9.75 crore, beating competition from Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Lucknow Super Giants in an intense bidding battle.
Ashwin previously represented CSK from 2009 to 2015 and played a key role in the franchise’s success during its golden era. His return reunites one of Chennai’s most successful spinners with the five-time IPL champions.

Speaking about the veteran off-spinner’s return, Stephen Fleming emphasized that Ashwin’s value extends beyond the price tag.

“It’s a bit of a homecoming for Ashwin, but he’s a world-class bowler,” Fleming said.

“It’s not so much the price – you look at how someone fits in, and there’s an emotional attachment for Ashwin with Chennai, so it’s a nice fit.”

Fleming admitted he was surprised by the lack of bidding interest in Ravindra, especially after the all-rounder’s impressive performances during New Zealand’s Test tour of India.
The CSK head coach believes Ravindra has tremendous potential and could develop into a complete all-round cricketer for the franchise.
Fleming compared Ravindra’s long-term value to players who contribute in multiple departments, making him an exciting prospect for Chennai Super Kings moving forward.
