‘Credit goes to CSK and Mahi bhai’: Shivam Dube thanks Dhoni after back-to-back blistering fifties vs Afghanistan

Indian all-rounder Shivam Dube showcased an outstanding performance in the second T20I against Afghanistan, contributing significantly to India’s successful chase of 172 runs. Batting at no. 4, Dube scored an unbeaten 63 off just 32 balls, steering the team to victory with 26 balls to spare. This follows his impressive show in the first T20I, where he remained unbeaten on 60 and helped India secure a convincing win in Mohali.

Dube’s remarkable form is not new; his rise began when he joined the Chennai Super Kings in the 2022 Indian Premier League auction. In his debut season with CSK, he made a decent impact, scoring 289 runs in 11 games. However, it was in the 2023 IPL season that Dube truly shone. He surpassed the 400-run mark, amassing 418 runs in 16 matches and played a pivotal role in CSK’s record-equalling fifth title win.

Reflecting on his resurgence, Dube credited the CSK team, particularly the senior members like captain MS Dhoni and coach Stephen Fleming, for revitalizing his career. In a conversation with JioCinema, Dube expressed gratitude, saying, “This credit goes to the CSK team and Mahi bhai. I always had the game, but what CSK do is take out that game from a player. So, they have given me that confidence.”

Dhoni’s mentorship proved crucial for Dube, who revealed, “When I was with CSK, he told me that I had the capability to bat well. But he told me to be smart. So, I focused on my limitations and what I could do well.” The support from coaching staff, including Mike Hussey and Fleming, further boosted his confidence, with their belief in his ability to score runs in the IPL.

Dube’s recent performances for India, coupled with his IPL success, make a compelling case for his inclusion in the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup scheduled in June. With consistent and impactful displays with both bat and ball, Dube is emerging as a key player for India in the T20 format.
