CSK Coaching Staff 2027

For the first time in nearly two decades, CSK are searching for a new head coach. Stephen Fleming’s departure has left a massive void at the top of Chennai’s coaching structure.

However, the uncertainty may not end with Fleming. Reports suggest batting coach Michael Hussey could also pursue opportunities elsewhere, potentially leaving CSK with another important position to fill.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the current CSK coaching staff and understand the roles they play.

CSK Face Major Changes After Stephen Fleming’s Exit

Fleming’s association with CSK began as a player in 2008 before he took over as head coach in 2009. He went on to oversee the franchise’s most successful era, winning five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies.

He managed the side for over 18 years, across 3 teams, and won them 7 major trophies. His departure followed a difficult period for CSK, with the franchise failing to add another title after IPL 2023.

Fleming’s successor could bring members of his own staff, but retaining experienced coaches already familiar with CSK would also provide much-needed continuity during the transition.

But what roles do the other CSK coaches play?

Eric Simons and Sriram Provide Continuity

Let’s understand why even without Fleming, the coaching staff is important. Firstly they provide a sense of continuity to the team’s coaching philosophy.

Starting with Eric Simon who is the bowling consultant for pacers mostly, we have a man who has studied the Indian conditions for years, and worked with some of the best in business. From Bravo to Mark Wood, and Pathirana, he has seen the rise of young bowlers as well as guided the older generation in Ashish Nehra.

Sridharan Sriram on the other hand might be a recent edition. But has the world of knowledge, especially when it comes to spin bowling. Before assuming the CSK role, he was with the Bangladesh’s national team. And on this team, he has worked closely with the likes of Noor and Hosein. The results of that association speak for themselves.

Rajiv Kumar and James Foster Complete the Coaching Core

Rajiv Kumar provides another layer of continuity within the CSK coaching staff. As assistant batting coach, he works alongside the batting unit and already understands the methods and expectations built during Fleming’s tenure. That familiarity could prove valuable when a new head coach arrives with different ideas.

James Foster, meanwhile, handles the fielding department. The former England wicketkeeper brings extensive coaching experience from franchise cricket and adds another specialist voice to an already experienced backroom team.

The Team Behind the CSK Coaches

The support structure goes much deeper than the coaches seen in the dugout. Taifun Simsek oversees physiotherapy, while Gregory King handles strength and conditioning. Dr Madhu Thottappillil serves as team doctor, with David Reid working as the team’s psychologist.

Russell Radhakrishnan and Sanjay Natarajan also handle team management and logistics respectively, completing a support system that operates behind the scenes throughout the IPL season.

Will CSK Completely Rebuild Their Coaching Staff?

That now becomes the bigger question. Fleming is gone, while Hussey’s future remains uncertain. But CSK do not necessarily need to dismantle everything they built under their former head coach.

Keeping experienced figures like Simons, Sriram, Rajiv and Foster would provide continuity while allowing Fleming’s successor to introduce his own ideas. For a franchise entering its biggest coaching transition in years, that balance could prove crucial.
