A new era dawns for Chennai Super Kings as Zaheer Khan takes charge as the franchise’s head coach ahead of IPL 2027.
The former Indian cricketer arrives with a decorated playing career and valuable mentorship experience, setting the stage for a fresh chapter at one of the IPL’s most celebrated teams this season.
Zaheer Khan Excited to Take Charge as CSK Head-Coach
Stephen Fleming recently parted ways with Chennai Super Kings, bringing down the longest coaching partnership in IPL history to an end after 18 years. During his spell, Fleming helped CSK emerge as a consistent force, guiding the side to five IPL titles. His departure follows a difficult phase for the team, which struggled to produce the results expected from the five-time champions.
Following Fleming’s exit, CSK have appointed former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan as their new head coach ahead of IPL 2027. After considerable speculation over who would take charge of the franchise following Fleming’s departure and the team’s recent struggles, the decision was finally made. Stepping into a new chapter, Zaheer joins the Super Kings as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
Reacting to his appointment, Zaheer said that it was an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the Indian Premier League history. He also recalled his battles against CSK during his playing career and spoke about the special atmosphere created by the fans at Chepauk. The Indian legend added that he was excited to join a franchise with such a rich history and legacy.
Why Zaheer Khan Could Be a Perfect Fit for Chennai Super Kings?
Zaheer Khan brings playing, tactical and mentorship experience to Chennai Super Kings. Having represented Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils, he understands different franchise environments and IPL demands. Experienced in franchise cricket, Zaheer also took up consulting roles after retirement. Khan served as Mumbai Indians’ Director of Cricket Operations from 2019 to 2022. Later, the former Indian pacer also served as Lucknow Super Giants’ mentor for the 2025 IPL season.
Familiarity with Indian conditions adds another dimension to his profile, while his crucial role with the ball during India’s 2011 World Cup winning campaign at home remains a significant part of his cricketing career. Mentorship experience with young cricketers further strengthens his credentials for the coaching role at CSK. Chennai Super Kings Managing Director K S Viswanathan has praised the legendary cricketer’s work with young players, particularly fast bowlers, and described him as one of the finest cricketing brains. As CSK enters the post-Fleming era in the upcoming IPL, Khan’s vast mentoring and leadership expertise will crucially guide the franchise into its next chapter.
