Dale Steyn Opens Door to CSK Head Coach Role Ahead of IPL 2027
As CSK’s search for a new head coach intensifies, another candidate has opened the door to the job. And it is none other than legendary South African pacer Dale Steyn.
In a recent interaction on X, Steyn was asked whether he would be interested in becoming the next CSK head coach. Steyn replied with: Yes Possibly.
His response was short, but it was enough to become one of the biggest pieces of CSK news surrounding the head coach search.
There is no indication yet that Chennai Super Kings have approached Steyn for the position. However, with the franchise searching for Stephen Fleming’s replacement, the former South African pacer’s interest adds another intriguing name to the conversation.
Dale Steyn’s IPL Coaching Experience
Steyn would not be entering unfamiliar territory if CSK decided to consider him for a coaching role.
The former RCB and SRH pacer served as Sunrisers Hyderabad’s pace-bowling coach after retiring from professional cricket. His stint gave him first-hand experience of working with an IPL dressing room and developing young fast bowlers.
One of the biggest names he worked with was Umran Malik, who emerged as one of India’s fastest bowlers and regularly crossed the 150 kmph mark during his breakthrough period.
Beyond the IPL, Steyn has continued to build his coaching experience through franchise cricket. However, taking charge of an entire IPL team would represent a significant step up from working primarily with fast bowlers.
Dale Steyn Has Always Wanted to Join CSK
If CSK ever make an offer, Steyn’s previous comments suggest he would certainly have something to think about.
The latest CSK news surrounding Steyn becomes even more interesting given his long-standing admiration for MS Dhoni. In a previous interview, Steyn revealed that there was a part of him that hoped Chennai would sign him during his playing career.
He was even willing to accept a reduced role simply to experience the franchise from within. Steyn has also spoken about his fascination with Dhoni’s captaincy and his desire to learn from one of the IPL’s most successful leaders.
That admiration becomes particularly interesting now, with Steyn himself looking to grow as a coach.
Would Dale Steyn Be a Good Fit for CSK?
Steyn certainly has qualities that could benefit Chennai. He understands the IPL, has worked with young fast bowlers and could bring fresh ideas to a CSK side entering a new era.
His biggest strength, however, could also expose his biggest weakness. Most of Steyn’s coaching experience has centred around fast bowling rather than managing an entire franchise.
Replacing Fleming requires someone capable of handling tactics, player management, auctions and overall squad planning. Steyn has yet to prove himself in such a role.
