Chennai Super Kings could face some difficult calls before submitting their IPL 2027 retention list. With CSK once again involved in some high-profile trade rumours, it becomes even more important to understand which players they might retain and who could eventually be allowed to leave.
While there are some obvious CSK retentions, several names might not make the final cut because of factors such as squad balance, form and auction purse.

CSK’s Indian Core
If there is one area CSK would not want to disturb, it is their Indian core. Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ayush Mhatre, Shivam Dube and Anshul Kamboj all have strong cases to stay.
Barring Gaikwad and Dube, each of these players enjoyed an impressive season. Samson finished as CSK’s leading run-scorer, while Kamboj led their bowling attack with 21 wickets. Mhatre also made an immediate impact, scoring 201 runs at a strike rate of 177.88 before injury cut his campaign short.
But these players offer more than numbers. Samson and Gaikwad give CSK two established Indian top-order batters and leadership options. Mhatre represents the future, while Kamboj provides something every IPL team values: a reliable Indian pacer.
More was expected from Gaikwad and Dube last season. However, both have done enough in the past to retain their places. Dube, in particular, continues to offer a specific middle-order role as a powerful spin-hitter that CSK would find difficult to replace with another Indian batter.
Brevis, Overton and Noor Lead Overseas Retentions
Jamie Overton should have one of the strongest cases among CSK’s overseas players.
The England all-rounder took 14 wickets while also scoring 136 runs at a strike rate of 158.14. His ability to bowl important overs and provide late-order power gives CSK valuable balance without requiring two separate overseas players for those roles.
Noor Ahmad should also remain part of Chennai’s plans. His 2026 campaign did not quite match his 24-wicket season in 2025, but a young wrist-spinner who already understands the conditions at Chepauk remains a valuable long-term asset.
Then comes Dewald Brevis. The South African had a quiet IPL 2026, scoring 151 runs at a strike rate of 127.97. But at just 23, releasing him after one poor campaign would mean giving up on a potential long-term middle-order option just when CSK are trying to build their next core.
What Happens to MS Dhoni?
This has to be the biggest question surrounding the CSK retained players 2027 announcement. For almost two decades, CSK have been synonymous with MS Dhoni. But IPL 2026 felt different.
Dhoni did not feature in a single match after suffering a calf injury before the tournament. Although there were hopes of a comeback, fitness concerns kept him on the sidelines throughout the campaign.
Hence, the question is looming large: has MS Dhoni finally moved on?
It is hardly about whether CSK want to retain him. The bigger question is whether Dhoni wants to play another IPL season. The answer should become clearer once Chennai announce their final retention list.
What Could the Retentions Mean for CSK’s Auction?
Keeping this core would mean CSK do not need another complete rebuild at the IPL 2027 mini-auction. Instead, the franchise could focus on releasing expensive or peripheral players, recovering auction purse and filling specific gaps in the squad.
With Chennai also featuring heavily in trade rumours, their final retention list could provide the first real indication of just how aggressive they plan to be before IPL 2027.
