CSK Yet to “Find The Right Combination”: Head Coach Stephen Fleming

As the IPL 2024 season progresses past its halfway mark, defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) find themselves facing unexpected challenges. Despite a strong start to the season, their recent loss at home against Lucknow Super Giants has shed light on some underlying issues within the team.

One notable change this season has been the departure from their traditional strategy of sticking with a fixed playing XI. Coach Stephen Fleming has acknowledged the need to experiment with different combinations, especially with players like Rachin Ravindra being dropped and Daryl Mitchell’s inconsistent form leading to changes in his position within the team.

Speaking after the recent match, Fleming admitted that finding the right combination has been a mix of trying to identify the best XI and addressing form concerns. He emphasized the importance of getting key players in form, even if it takes time to establish the ideal setup.

“It’s a mix of trying to find that [the best XI], and also a bit of form. We are little bit uncomfortable with some areas, so we’re just trying to find not a quick fix but try and find the right combination,” said Fleming after their game against Lucknow Super Giants on April 23.

Mitchell, in particular, has been under scrutiny, with CSK attempting to find the right batting position for him. Fleming explained that moving Mitchell up the order was an attempt to capitalize on his strengths and provide stability to the top order.

Another factor impacting CSK’s performance has been the pitch conditions at their home ground, the MA Chidambaram Stadium. While they have managed to win previous games at home, the recent encounter with LSG exposed the challenges posed by a true surface and the dew factor. Fleming expressed frustration at the lack of synergy between the pitch conditions and the team’s strategy, especially considering CSK’s reliance on spinners.

Despite these challenges, CSK remains optimistic about their prospects in the tournament. Fleming highlighted the need for adaptation and resilience in the face of adversity, emphasizing the team’s ability to compete in every game despite not hitting top form.

As the tournament progresses, CSK will need to address these issues swiftly to maintain their stronghold in the IPL and defend their title successfully.
