Following Stephen Fleming’s departure after an 18-year association, CSK have entered a crucial phase while searching for a new head coach. Eoin Morgan has reportedly been discussed as a potential successor, but his massive salary demand could complicate negotiations. According to journalist Rohit Juglan, Morgan is seeking a whopping INR 20 crore, while MS Dhoni has reportedly been involved in talks with the former England captain. Such demands could complicate negotiations.
Considering CSK’s recent struggles, the team appears ready to explore a major rebuild. Chennai have missed the IPL playoffs for three consecutive seasons, while Fleming’s exit was reportedly a mutual decision, creating the need for a fresh coaching approach. Former CSK player Ravichandran Ashwin has also stated that Morgan was among the top candidates under consideration. His credentials are difficult to ignore as he has guided England to their 2019 ODI World Cup triumph and led KKR to the IPL 2021 final, where the side finished as runners-up. Such white-ball experience could make him a perfect fit for Chennai Super Kings.
Nevertheless, the reported INR 20 crore demand could make the appointment difficult, especially as the franchise weighs its long-term plans and coaching philosophy. Apart from Eoin Morgan, Mike Hussey remains in the list as the former Australian batter has represented CSK both as a player and batting coach in the previous years, giving him knowledge of the squad and its culture. Recently, Hussey reportedly declined England’s batting coach offer and instead chose to work as a part-time consultant with Australian cricket. That decision could keep him available for an opportunity in Chennai.
Despite those credentials, one significant obstacle remains. Journalist Rohit Juglan has suggested that MS Dhoni and the CSK owners could be considering a complete revamp of the coaching unit to introduce a fresh approach. Since Hussey has spent years for the side within Fleming’s setup, his appointment may not deliver the change the franchise wants. Therefore, his experience could be valuable, but strategically, he may not be the choice.
