Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have retained MS Dhoni for the upcoming 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), putting an end to speculations about the legendary cricketer’s future. Dhoni, who initially left the cricketing community wondering about a potential retirement after the 2023 season, confirmed his commitment to return for the 2024 season after working on his fitness.
CSK fans, known for donning the iconic yellow jerseys with Dhoni’s name, had become a distinctive sight during the 2023 IPL season, emphasizing the captain’s immense popularity and influence. Despite grappling with a knee injury throughout the 2023 season, Dhoni, with heavy strapping on his knee, consistently contributed to CSK’s performance.
CSK CEO offers a big statement on whether MS Dhoni will play IPL 2024
In a statement about Dhoni’s comeback, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan expressed confidence in the captain’s commitment, stating, “If our leader has given a word, he has never gone back. He already told what he was planning to do in that interview. I am sure that knowing MS, he will always do what he has committed to do. He is quite fit. Thalaivan is thalaivan (our leader is our leader).”
Dhoni, known as “Thala” by CSK fans, underwent a successful left knee surgery in June 2023 and has been actively training in Ranchi since the conclusion of the 2023 season. Despite managing injuries, Dhoni led CSK to a remarkable fifth IPL title in the previous season, further solidifying his status as one of India’s most successful cricket captains.
As the only active player who captained a team in the inaugural IPL season in 2008, Dhoni remains a cricketing icon, having concluded his international career on August 15, 2020. Notably, he is the sole international captain to secure victories in the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, and the Champions Trophy. Dhoni also led India to the top of the Test rankings in 2009, leaving an indelible mark on Indian cricket.
