Despite the IPL being in its off-season, CSK fans had an eventful August. Several major developments took place across different areas of the franchise.
From the coaching transition and Hardik Pandya trade rumours to fresh reports about MS Dhoni’s future with the franchise, there was plenty happening away from the field. Meanwhile, several CSK players continued to impress for their domestic and international teams.
With plenty to unpack, here’s a roundup of all the major CSK news from August.
CSK’s Head Coach Search Continues
Following Stephen Fleming’s departure, the CSK head coach position remains vacant. The Kiwi coach left in July and has since taken charge of the England Test side.
However, CSK are yet to name his replacement. Almost every week brings a new name into the fray, with the speculation initially starting around Michael Hussey potentially taking up the role.
While there has been little development on that front, pundits have added names such as Brendon McCullum and Eoin Morgan to the conversation, with Ravichandran Ashwin backing the latter.
Fans, on the other hand, continue to see MS Dhoni as the ideal candidate. But while they debate whether Dhoni should replace Fleming, an even bigger question surrounds his future at CSK.
What Is MS Dhoni’s Future With the Franchise?
This question has hounded CSK fans for months. After Dhoni didn’t feature in a single game during IPL 2026, everyone wants to know what his future with the franchise looks like.
Recent reports have claimed that Dhoni explored acquiring a significant stake in CSK. Some reports suggested that he wanted 25% equity, while the franchise was willing to offer a considerably smaller share, with figures of 3% and later 5.5% being reported.
However, neither Dhoni nor CSK have confirmed that such negotiations took place.
Meanwhile, RevSportz has reported that CSK want Dhoni to remain involved with the franchise and that he could potentially take up a mentoring role next season.
For now, his exact role remains unclear. But whether as a player, mentor or something bigger, speculation surrounding Dhoni’s long-term relationship with CSK is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
Hardik Pandya Trade Rumours Continue
Apart from MS Dhoni’s future, another story that kept CSK fans occupied throughout August was the possibility of Hardik Pandya joining the franchise.
The Indian all-rounder has repeatedly been linked with CSK amid uncertainty surrounding his future at Mumbai Indians. However, acquiring Pandya could come at a significant cost if MI eventually decide to entertain a trade.
Shivam Dube and Ayush Mhatre are two names that have featured in hypothetical trade packages, with former CSK batter Subramaniam Badrinath suggesting that Mumbai should demand the duo in return for Pandya.
However, there is no confirmation that MI have formally demanded either player or that serious negotiations with CSK have begun.
For now, Hardik to CSK remains one of the biggest trade rumours rather than an imminent deal.
CSK Players Stay Busy Around the World
While most of the major CSK news came from developments off the field, several players also made their presence felt with bat and ball in August.
Dewald Brevis was the biggest standout. The South African smashed consecutive scores of 75 in the T20I tri-series in Namibia. After scoring 75 off 50 balls against the hosts, he followed it with an unbeaten 75 off just 32 deliveries against Zimbabwe, smashing seven fours and six sixes.
Back home, Anshul Kamboj showed that he can contribute with the bat as well. Playing for North Zone in the Duleep Trophy, the pacer smashed 60 off just 52 balls from No. 9, including five sixes. Ruturaj Gaikwad also returned to domestic action as West Zone captain and scored 66 in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Noor Ahmad enjoyed another successful stint in The Hundred. The Afghan spinner returned figures of 3/33 in the final, helping his side finish the tournament with the title.
With several CSK players finding form away from the IPL, Chennai will hope they carry the same momentum into the next season.
A Crucial Few Months Ahead for CSK
August perfectly summed up the transition CSK currently find themselves in. While questions remain over the new head coach, MS Dhoni’s future and possible trades, their players continue to deliver around the world. With retentions and the IPL 2027 mini-auction approaching, the next few months could shape Chennai’s new era.
