Chennai Super Kings have appointed Zaheer Khan as their new head-coach, with MS Dhoni helping to choose the former Indian pacer. The move has sparked excitement among the fans ahead of IPL 2027.
According to CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan, Dhoni joined the talks before Zaheer was selected, with the former captain’s involvement adding intrigue to the franchise’s change.

Former Indian captain MS Dhoni played a key role in Zaheer’s appointment as Chennai Super Kings’ head coach ahead of IPL 2027. Managing director Kasi Viswanathan said the management group considered the former Indian pacer before agreeing on his appointment. The management made the decision following Stephen Fleming’s departure after his 18-year association with the franchise.
Meanwhile, the management also included owner Rupa Gurunath and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad in the discussion. Viswanathan stated that Dhoni played the major role in the decision, while reports said the franchise wanted an Indian coach with IPL experience and familiarity with domestic conditions. Zaheer having represented India, coupled with his familiarity with local conditions, strengthened his candidature, while his IPL experience with RCB, MI and DD further boosted his credentials. His past association with Dhoni as a former Indian team-mate also provided familiarity between the two, strengthening the connection within CSK’s cricketing set-up.
Previously, Khan worked with Mumbai Indians in operations and development roles before mentoring Lucknow Super Giants. CSK highlighted his experience mentoring young players when the appointment was announced. Although this will be his first head-coaching assignment in the Indian Premier League, his consulting experience have given him exposure to team management. Soon, Zaheer will begin to work with CSK as the franchise begins preparations for the 2027 IPL season.

Notably, CSK’s official statement announcing Zaheer’s appointment did not mention a multi-year deal, indicating that it will initially be a one-year stint. Khan’s immediate task will be to map out the team’s retention strategy and identify targeted players ahead of the mini-auction in December.
The legendary cricketer’s next responsibility will be preparing the five-time champions for the upcoming IPL campaign. Under the new setup, Zaheer will have the authority to choose his support staff, according to Kasi Viswanathan, giving him an opportunity to shape the coaching setup around his methods.
Failing to qualify for the play-offs for three consecutive seasons, CSK will seek to make a comeback in their upcoming IPL campaign. Experience in Indian cricket and the IPL could help Zaheer assess the squad and identify areas requiring improvement before the season.
