Richard Gleeson has been brought in as a replacement for the injured Devon Conway in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad for the remainder of IPL 2024, as confirmed by the Indian Premier League on Thursday, April 18, 2024.
Conway, the New Zealand opener, sustained a left thumb injury during the second T20 International match against Australia in February, ruling him out for the entire IPL season. Despite hopes of his return in May, CSK has announced his absence for the rest of IPL 2024.
Conway played a pivotal role in CSK’s IPL 2023 victory, amassing 672 runs in 15 innings with an impressive average of 51.69 and a strike rate close to 140. Over his IPL career, Conway has accumulated 924 runs in 23 matches for CSK, with nine half-centuries to his credit and a highest score of 92*.
Who is Richard Gleeson?
In place of Conway, CSK has enlisted the services of England’s Richard Gleeson. Gleeson, who made his T20I debut for England in 2022 against India, holds the distinction of being the third oldest T20I debutant for England. He made an immediate impact in his debut match by dismissing Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant.
Gleeson’s cricket journey took an unconventional path, as he did not embark on his professional career until the age of 27. His first-class debut came in 2015 for Northamptonshire, where he showcased his skills until 2018. Despite contemplating retirement due to back concerns, Gleeson persevered and found success in the T20 Blast 2022, claiming 23 wickets at an average of 16.34, with impressive figures of 5/33.
The seasoned pacer has plied his trade in various domestic leagues worldwide, including the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Big Bash League (BBL), SA20, and ILT20, representing teams like the Rangpur Riders, Melbourne Renegades, Durban Super Giants, and the Gulf Giants. Gleeson’s inclusion in the CSK squad adds depth and experience to their bowling lineup, offering a reliable option in the absence of Conway.
