CSK-SRH Trade: Livingstone and Edwards Join CSK as Khaleel and Ellis Leave

A major squad shake-up has put Chennai Super Kings in the spotlight ahead of IPL 2027. In a headline-grabbing four-player trade with Sunrisers Hyderabad, CSK has acquired the services of Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards, but the departures of two talented pace bowlers raise questions about the franchise’s strategy.

This move signals CSK’s intent to strengthen its batting firepower, but whether this gamble pays off remains to be seen.

CSK Trades Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis to SRH to Buy Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards

Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings have completed a four-player trade, reshaping both squads ahead of the upcoming IPL season. Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards will move to CSK, while fast bowlers Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis head to SRH. The BCCI confirmed the exchange on Thursday, making it one of the notable moves of the trading period for both ambitious franchises.

Livingstone joins Chennai at a reduced fee of INR 6 crore, despite SRH having bought him for 13 crores at the IPL 2026 mini-auction. After winning the title with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2025, the batting all-rounder managed only two appearances for Hyderabad in the following season. Edwards, who did not feature in any of SRH’s matches in IPL 2026, will retain his existing fee of INR 3 crore as he is set to begin a fresh chapter with the five-time champions.

Meanwhile, SRH acquired two experienced Indian and overseas pace options whose previous campaigns were disrupted by injuries. Nathan Ellis, signed by CSK for INR 2 crore to handle death overs, missed the entire season after suffering a hamstring injury at the domestic One-Day Cup final. Khaleel played five matches before a quadriceps injury ended his campaign. He returns to his old franchise, which he represented from 2018 to 2021.

Will this Trade Benefit CSK?

Questions over the value of this trade are unavoidable for Chennai. CSK has surrendered two quick bowlers, including Ellis, who was expected to strengthen the side’s death-bowling options. Replacing that depth could become a serious concern, particularly if injuries or inconsistent performances affect the pace attack during the tournament.

Despite his reputation for power-hitting, Livingstone’s recent returns offer little certainty. Even in RCB’s title-winning IPL 2025 campaign, he managed to score only 112 runs across eight innings. Jack Edwards, meanwhile, remains unfamiliar to many cricket fans and has yet to showcase his potential. That does not make the Australian a poor signing, but it does make the move a gamble. Chennai Super Kings may believe a fresh environment can unlock the Englishman’s best form and give Edwards room to grow. Ultimately, the balance of this exchange will be judged by performances, not reputations or auction prices. Whether the arrivals justify the departures will become clear as the 2027 Indian Premier League season unfolds.
