IPL 2026: Chennai Super Kings Crumble in 87-Run Loss to Rajasthan Royals

Chennai Super Kings Eliminated From IPL 2026

Chennai Super Kings’s IPL 2026 campaign came to a disappointing end as Gujarat Titans knocked them out of the tournament with a crushing 89-run victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. In a must-win final league encounter, CSK were completely outplayed in both departments, bringing their playoff hopes to an end.

The defeat also marked the third consecutive season in which the five-time champions failed to qualify for the playoffs, a rare and disappointing phase for one of the most successful franchises in IPL history. Despite showing signs of revival midway through the tournament, Chennai ultimately failed to recover from their inconsistent start and a season constantly disrupted by injuries.

Titans’ Clinical All-Round Show Sealed Them The Victory

Gujarat Titans produced a complete all-round performance that they surpassed Chennai in both batting and bowling to officially knock them out of IPL 2026.

Batting first, the hosts started off aggressively. Titans’ opening batsmen attacked confidently posting 62 runs in the powerplay without loss of wickets. The openers Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill stitched 125 runs partnership for the first wicket which helped the team gain momentum. After the loss of the first wicket, Jos Butler played a quick-fire innings and boosted the rhythm further. It was the top 3 batsmen of GT – Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill and Jos Butler who stood tall with 84, 64 and 57 not out respectively to post a huge total of 229 runs in 20 overs with the loss of 4 wickets.

With pressure already built, the visitors coming to bat second lost their opener and key batter Sanju Samson for a duck. Now the pressure has increased further. Still Super Kings started to attack aggressively and scored quick runs but at the same time wickets were also falling. Siraj and Rabada’s fiery spell in the powerplay hunted CSK’s top order down.

At the end of 7 overs Chennai were at 63 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Then Shivam Dube’s astonishing knock of 47 from just 17 balls pushed the team’s run-rate. Though the Chennai batters attacked from the start till the end pushing the run rate the Gujarat bowlers did a fantastic job in taking quick wickets where Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan picked up 3 wickets each and restricting Super Kings to 140 all out within 13.4 overs.

Factors That Did Not Favor CSK

Men in Yellow endured a disappointing IPL 2026 season, with several factors contributing to their exit from the campaign. One of the biggest setbacks came in the second half of the tournament when Jamie Overton was ruled out due to injury. The bowling all-rounder had been delivering important breakthroughs and maintaining control at middle overs. His omission from the squad weakened the bowling line-up which was the main weapon for the Super Kings this year. Their bowling acted as a key instrument in winning matches that batsmen were able to play their knocks without pressure.

Once Overton was ruled out from the squad, the other bowlers didn’t get enough support and also the next 3 crucial matches including the last league encounter against Titans ended in loss. Also injuries to other key players before and during the tournament like Nathan Ellis, Ayush Mhatre, Khaleel Ahmed, Ramakrishna Ghosh and the ex-captain MS Dhoni created confusions in selecting the right playing eleven.

Even though in the mid tournament Chennai were able to find the right combinations in the 11 and gained a winning momentum, failure to find it at the starting stage in addition with the recurring injuries didn’t favor the 5 time IPL champions.
