Ayush Mhatre ruled out of IPL 2026, massive setback for Chennai Super Kings

The inevitable has come to pass for Chennai Super Kings, as Ayush Mhatre has been finally ruled out for the remainder of the season. Earlier, it was reported that the player might return after three weeks, after suffering a hamstring injury.

However, it has now been confirmed that Mhatre has severely damaged his hamstring, an injury that will require a longer recovery period. As a result, he will not be able to return before the end of the season.

CSK confirm Mhatre’s injury extent

The franchise released an official statement on Tuesday, confirming that the young opener will miss the remainder of IPL 2026.

“Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 due to a left hamstring injury sustained while batting during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18. Ayush’s injury will require a rehabilitation period of 6–12 weeks,” the statement read.

The injury occurred during CSK’s chase against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where Mhatre was in explosive form before pulling up while running between the wickets. What initially looked like a minor concern has now turned into a season-ending blow.

Mhatre’s breakout season cut short

Mhatre’s absence comes at the worst possible time for CSK, given his form this season. In just six innings, he had scored 201 runs at a strike rate of nearly 160, making him the team’s leading run-scorer.

He registered two half-centuries, along with 24 fours and 9 sixes, establishing himself as CSK’s most aggressive batter in the powerplay. His ability to take on bowlers early gave the team fast starts, something they had struggled with in previous seasons.

More importantly, Mhatre brought intent and fearlessness to the top of the order. Whether it was pace or spin, he attacked from ball one, allowing players around him to settle into defined roles. His performances were one of the few consistent positives in an otherwise inconsistent campaign.

What this means for CSK

Mhatre’s injury leaves a significant gap in CSK’s batting lineup. The team now loses not just their top scorer, but also their primary aggressor in the powerplay. Replacing his impact will not be easy.

This setback adds to an already growing injury list that includes MS Dhoni, Nathan Ellis, and Khaleel Ahmed. With multiple key players unavailable, CSK’s balance has already been affected across departments.

The team may now have to reshuffle their batting order or bring in a replacement, but finding someone who can replicate Mhatre’s impact at the top remains a challenge. His absence could force CSK to adopt a more cautious approach in the powerplay, which may impact their overall scoring patterns.

With the season entering a crucial phase, this injury could have long-term implications on CSK’s playoff hopes. What once looked like a promising campaign now faces another major hurdle, and how the team responds to this setback will define the rest of their IPL 2026 journey.
