Chennai Super Kings have suffered another major setback in IPL 2026, with left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to a right quadricep injury. The franchise confirmed that the injury will require more than 12 weeks of recovery, effectively ending his campaign.
Khaleel picked up the injury during CSK’s clash against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 14 in Chennai. He was forced to walk off the field after bowling just five balls of his final over, with youngster Gurjapneet Singh completing the remaining delivery. The incident raised immediate concerns, and the diagnosis has now confirmed a long-term absence.
CSK’s bowling attack takes another hit
Khaleel’s absence further weakens a bowling unit that is already stretched. He had been one of CSK’s key new-ball options, offering control and movement early in the innings. Losing him midway through the season disrupts the balance of the attack.
The situation is compounded by the unavailability of Nathan Ellis, who has already been ruled out of the entire tournament, and the delayed return of his replacement Spencer Johnson, who is still recovering from injury. At the same time, MS Dhoni remains sidelined with a calf issue, leaving CSK short on both experience and leadership on the field.
Replacement options and added responsibility
With Khaleel Ahmed likely to miss out, Akash Madhwal has emerged as a strong contender to step into the Chennai Super Kings lineup. Known for his sharp pace and death-over control, Madhwal brings a fresh edge to CSK’s bowling attack and could take on added responsibility in crunch situations.
In Khaleel’s absence, CSK may also explore multiple domestic options to maintain balance in their squad. Mukesh Choudhary stands as a like-for-like replacement, offering left-arm pace and swing, while Ramakrishna Ghosh adds versatility as a right-arm seamer who can contribute with the bat.
Ghosh, in particular, has been in excellent form in domestic cricket. His remarkable spell of 7 for 42 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy—recorded as the best figures for Maharashtra in List A cricket—highlights his wicket-taking ability. Alongside that, his explosive unbeaten 64 off just 27 balls in the same tournament proves he can deliver impactful performances with the bat as well.
With multiple options available, CSK’s team management will have to carefully decide the right combination, but Akash Madhwal currently appears to be the frontrunner to fill Khaleel Ahmed’s shoes.
Pressure builds on CSK’s campaign
With just two wins in five matches, CSK are already under pressure to find consistency. The growing list of injuries has made that task even more difficult.
Their next game against Sunrisers Hyderabad becomes crucial, as they look to stay in contention. However, with key players missing, CSK will need their squad depth to step up quickly if they are to keep their season on track.
