Chennai Super Kings legendary Dwayne Bravo has officially retired from all forms of cricket following an injury-shortened season in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The groin injury, sustained during a match for the Trinbago Knight Riders against the St Lucia Kings, marked the end of Bravo’s storied career. Attempting a catch in the seventh over, Bravo pulled up in pain and was forced to leave the field, not bowling a single over in what would be his final match.
Bravo announced his retirement with a heartfelt message reflecting on his cricketing journey. He expressed deep gratitude for the sport that had been a part of his life since he was five years old. “From the age of five, I knew this was what I wanted to do – this was the sport I was destined to play. In return, you gave me the life I dreamed of for myself and my family. For that, I can’t thank you enough,” Bravo shared.
He acknowledged the toll cricket had taken on his body, admitting that while his mind still wanted to continue, his body could no longer endure the pain and strain. “It’s time to face reality. My mind wants to keep going, but my body can no longer endure the pain, the breakdowns, and the strain.”
Dwayne Bravo Bids Farewell to Cricket as a Player to Join KKR as a Mentor
Throughout his 21-year professional career, Bravo set remarkable benchmarks in T20 cricket. He won titles in the IPL, PSL, and Big Bash, and was part of the West Indies’ victorious campaigns in the T20 World Cups in 2012 and 2016. Bravo finishes his T20 career as the second-highest wicket-taker in the format, with 631 wickets in 582 matches, second only to his compatriot Kieron Pollard.
Bravo’s international career saw him retire from Test cricket in 2015 and initially step away from all formats in 2018. However, he returned in 2019 to help prepare the West Indies for the 2020 T20 World Cup. His final international match came against Australia in November 2021, when he retired from international cricket after a distinguished career.
Looking ahead, Bravo has already secured his next role in cricket. He will take over as the mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL from the 2025 season, filling the gap left by Gautam Gambhir, who was appointed head coach of the Indian men’s team. This new chapter follows his stint as bowling coach with Chennai Super Kings in 2022 and 2023, where he helped guide the team to success.
