New Zealand opener Devon Conway has chosen to let go the central contract for the 2024-2025 season, opting instead for a casual contract to allow flexibility in his schedule. This decision will enable him to participate in South Africa’s SA20 league next January. Despite this shift, Conway will remain available for all nine Tests on the Black Caps’ calendar and the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled for early next year, according to New Zealand Cricket (NZC).
Conway, born in Johannesburg and having represented New Zealand since 2020, has played 20 Tests, 32 ODIs, and 50 Twenty20 internationals. The 33-year-old emphasized that his decision was made with careful consideration for his and his family’s needs. “Playing for the Black Caps is still the pinnacle for me, and I’m hugely passionate about representing New Zealand and winning international cricket matches,” Conway stated in a news release.

His choice mirrors that of former captain Kane Williamson, who is also set to play in the SA20 league under a similar casual contract arrangement. NZC has adopted this flexible approach to retain their top players amidst the increasing allure of lucrative T20 leagues around the world.
Scott Weenink, NZC’s chief executive, highlighted the necessity of such flexibility: “In the current environment, it’s important to have flexibility in our system to navigate some of the challenges posed by franchise cricket.”
Conway, along with Williamson, has been included in the 15-man squad for a one-off Test against Afghanistan and a two-match series in Sri Lanka this September. Conway expressed his excitement about these upcoming fixtures, emphasizing his commitment to the Black Caps and his anticipation for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next February.
Additionally, Finn Allen, another Black Caps opener, has also opted out of a central contract, choosing to be available for selection on a match-by-match basis. NZC will offer central contracts to two yet-to-be-determined players to fill the vacancies left by Conway and Allen.
