Sanju Samson Century, Akeal Hosein Star in 103-Run Win Over Mumbai India

Chennai Super Kings asserted their dominance over Mumbai Indians with a commanding win. They defeated MI by 103 runs at the Wankhede Stadium, climbing up to the fifth position on the points table.

This victory came at the perfect time for CSK, especially after their close loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The win was built on two standout performances, with Sanju Samson leading the charge with the bat and Akeal Hosein sealing the game with the ball.

Sanju Samson’s flamboyant hundred

The in-form opener continued his purple patch. After a rare failure in the previous game, Samson bounced back in style, scoring his fifth IPL century and second of the season for CSK.

Opening alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad, Samson initially played second fiddle as the skipper took on Hardik Pandya in the powerplay. However, once Gaikwad fell, the responsibility shifted entirely onto Samson.

He adapted quickly, balancing aggression with control. Bringing up his fifty in just 27 balls, Samson ensured the scoring rate never dipped, even as wickets fell at the other end.

The turning point of the innings came through two crucial partnerships. Samson stitched a 31-run stand with Dewald Brevis and followed it up with a 43-run partnership with Kartik Sharma, stabilising the innings and setting up a strong finish.

What stood out was his game awareness. Early on, he targeted experienced bowlers like Hardik, and later capitalised on loose deliveries from younger bowlers like Ashwini and Krish Bhagat.

In the final over, Samson took complete control, smashing 16 runs and bringing up his century in style. He finished unbeaten on 101 off 54 balls, with 10 fours and 6 sixes.

Interestingly, this was only the third time he batted outside the powerplay for CSK this season, and he already has two centuries in such situations. More importantly, this knock resulted in CSK’s third win of the campaign.

Akeal Hosein seals the deal with the ball

One of the key tactical moments in the game was the decision to bring in Akeal Hosein as an impact player. For most of the first innings, it seemed CSK might opt for an extra batter, but the late surge allowed them to strengthen their bowling instead.

Hosein made an immediate impact. In his first over, he dismissed Danish Malewar, and then followed it up with a wicket-maiden, removing Naman Dhir.

These early blows, combined with Mukesh Choudhary’s wicket of Quinton de Kock, pushed MI onto the back foot. They could only manage 29 runs in the powerplay for the loss of three wickets, effectively ending any early momentum.

Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma attempted to rebuild, but Hosein returned in the middle overs to dismiss both set batters. His spell broke the backbone of MI’s chase and ensured there was no comeback.

What this win means for CSK

This victory could prove to be a turning point in CSK’s season. With this win, they move up to fifth on the points table, going above Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals.

After a shaky start to the season, where they struggled with injuries and inconsistent performances, CSK are finally beginning to find rhythm. Back-to-back impactful performances, especially from key players, have brought much-needed stability.

More importantly, this win reignites belief within the squad. For a team that has not made the playoffs in the last four seasons, this could be the moment where their campaign turns.

With momentum now on their side and key players stepping up at the right time, CSK will start believing that a playoff spot is within reach.
