Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has taken a major step forward in expanding its footprint in global cricket by acquiring a Texas franchise in Major League Cricket (MLC) in the US. On 18 March, 2023, the franchise had announced the news on Twitter, a key moment in its development process. In their cryptic social media posts, CSK had captioned the announcement, “Soon big announcement. Howdy Texas! Show some yellow to our overseas cousin, @TeamTexasMLC! This exciting message caused quite a buzz with.”
The development had come just one day before the MLC Domestic Player Draft, which was scheduled to take place in Houston. With over 100 players eligible to represent the “U.S. cricket team” in the tournament, the announcement by CSK had added some excitement to the meet.
How CSK NRI Cousin Texas Super Kings Got its Name?
In the lead-up to the 2023 draft on March 19, the Texas franchise revealed its partnership with the Chennai Super Kings. After the draft, they held a press conference where co-owner Anurag Jain, along with Stephen Fleming and K.S. Viswanathan, announced their team name, the Texas Super Kings, as well as their logo and coach. However, in late April, they changed their logo to resemble the logos of the Chennai and Joburg Super Kings.
In their inaugural season, the Texas Super Kings impressed by finishing second in the league standings and securing a spot in the semi-finals. Despite a strong start, including notable victories over the Los Angeles Knight Riders and MI New York, they were eliminated in the playoffs. Standout performances from Faf du Plessis, Devon Conway, and Dwayne Bravo established the team as a formidable contender. With valuable lessons learned and experience gained, the Texas Super Kings are gearing up for a promising return in the 2024 season.
With this, CSK fans have got another opportunity to celebrate and spread the “Yellove” love. Along with Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premiere League and JoBurg Super Kings in the SA20, the Men in Yellow are ready to win hearts as the Texas Super Kings in America’s very own franchise league, the Major League Cricket.
