In a thrilling encounter in the ongoing UP T20 League, Chennai Super Kings batter Sameer Rizvi delivered a match-defining performance reminding the netizens of MS Dhoni’s trademark batting style. Representing Kanpur Superstars, Rizvi played a crucial captain’s knock, scoring a superb 89 off 59 balls to steer his team out of a crucial situation and set a competitive total in their opening game against Lucknow Falcons at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow.
Kanpur found themselves in deep trouble early on, falling to 16/3 when Rizvi walked in to bat at number 5. The situation worsened as wickets continued to fall, leaving the team at 50/6. Rizvi, however, remained calm despite the increasing pressure, showcasing his composure and batting prowess. He held the innings together, much like Dhoni has done countless times for the Indian team, mixing calmness with aggression to keep the scoreboard ticking.
His knock was crucial, featuring eight fours and six big sixes, and he stayed on the field until the second last ball of the 19th over, helping Kanpur reach a total of 156 runs. Although he got out with the team on 148, his efforts had already put them in a strong position.
Defending the modest target, Kanpur’s bowlers rose to the occasion. Lucknow Falcons, led by captain Priyam Garg, who top-scored with 31 runs off 23 balls, and opener Samarth Singh, who contributed a quick 29 off 13 deliveries, put up a strong fight. However, the Kanpur bowlers kept their cool under pressure, chipping away with regular wickets in the runchase.
The match resulted in a nail-biting finish, with Lucknow falling just short, ending their innings at 153/9. The final wicket stand between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Vipraj Nigam added 30 runs, bringing their team very close to victory. However, they couldn’t get the team over the line, as Kanpur Superstars emerged victorious by a narrow margin of three runs, largely thanks to their captain Sameer Rizvi’s outstanding innings.
