Joburg Super Kings captain Faf du Plessis sees SA20 as platform for international return

Former South African captain Faf du Plessis is mulling over a return to the national side for a final attempt at glory in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. He will lead the Johannesburg Super Kings in the SA20 tournament, commencing on January 10. Despite retiring from Test cricket, Du Plessis remains active in the white-ball format, and the SA20 might serve as a platform for his last pursuit of an international return.

During the captains’ press interaction for the SA20, Du Plessis emphasized his initial focus on recovering from injury and rediscovering his form on the cricket field. Leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, he acknowledged the importance of the upcoming tournament and expressed his desire to play quality cricket.

Faf du Plessis credits MS Dhoni and Fleming for his growth as a player during his time with CSK

Having previously played under MS Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings, Du Plessis finds inspiration in Dhoni’s leadership style. Reflecting on his time with CSK, he noted that learning from experienced leaders like Stephen Fleming and MS Dhoni was a significant part of his leadership journey. While appreciating the calm and composed nature of Dhoni, he stressed the importance of being authentic in one’s leadership approach.

Recalling his early days at CSK, Du Plessis shared that observing and asking questions were key aspects of his learning process. Describing Dhoni as “captain cool,” he highlighted the significance of remaining calm under pressure. However, Du Plessis emphasized the need for originality in leadership, noting that while learning from great leaders, it is essential to develop a style that works uniquely for oneself.

Looking ahead, Du Plessis is eager to lead the Johannesburg Super Kings, acknowledging the valuable experiences gained from his time with CSK and aiming to leave his own imprint on the franchise. As he contemplates a return to the South African national side, the T20 World Cup in 2024 holds a special place in his aspirations for a final crack at global success.
