5 Players CSK can target in IPL mega Auction 2024

The Chennai Super Kings are now in the midst of a season that is best described as a mix of anticipation and determination. Ruturaj Gaikwad’s first season as captain proved to be a glimmer of hope amid challenges, with a record of seven wins and seven defeats. But their playoff dream faded in the last moments and they are now desperate for revenge.

With the mega auction upcoming and Ms Dhoni’s potential retirement, the focus is now on the significant challenge of rebuilding and fortifying the team. In this blog, we explore the strategic decisions that Chennai need to make, with attention to five key players CSK should go after to strengthen their squad. With the auction fever season upon us, we look at the possible game changers that can bring the winning glory back to the Yellow Army in the IPL 2025.

CSK’s Template

Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will head into the IPL 2025 auctions with a carefully shaped blueprint developed from years of triumph. Familiar patterns dictate their targets: – A number three bowling option, an overseas top-order batter, an overseas pacer, a middle-order stabilizer, and a mix of all-rounders.

Gaikwad’s captaincy ensures a new look that will inject life into the well-worn strategy of CSK. As they go through the auction pool, the devoted fans of CSK eagerly await the players who will be seen wearing the yellow jersey in the process of earning the team triumphs in Gaikwad’s hands. Whether MSD goes or not we will buy an Indian keeper batter because Conway can keep wickets himself.

Please note that the top 3 next season for CSK would be Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad as openers and Rachin Ravindra to bat at 3 with Dube to come next.

Potential Departures for CSK

Ajinkya Rahane has to be sold out or supported again however with the IPL moving further and seeing different teams play we will be urged to release Rahane from our squad. One of Daryl Mithcel or Moeen Ali will exit from CSK.

Therefore, the most important task is the order of the batting. An opener, middle-order batsman, and an aggressive allrounder in the batting department. In terms of bowling we shall mostly retain most of our core in the auction by re-purchasing our young fast bowlers and with Jadeja being one spinner we will not buy another.

With that being said, let’s take a look at the five players CSK can target in the mega auction of 2024.

5 Players CSK can target in 2024 Mega Auction of IPL

1) Glenn Phillips

Glenn Phillips, as the name goes, does more than just score runs. Many times, his outstanding fielding abilities have changed matches in the team’s favour. Known for his energy and finesse on the ground, Phillips is a live wire in the field, who is capable of getting crucial run-outs as well as taking spectacular catches. He is one player CSK is most likely to target in the mega auction.

Besides what he does with the bat, his fielding excellence gives him an extra level as a player. He is biding the time on the bench in the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) squad and is perhaps not going to be considered in the next season. Although it is clear that he is a talented player and can turn matches, he has been unable to get a regular spot in the XI.

In addition, Phillips’s legacy in New Zealand cricket has been huge. His repeated good showing in the template of domestic cricket and remarkable stints in international cricket has made him a promising talent. Phillips’ performance under pressure and his ability to change the course of the match in the dying moments have made him admired and respected, and he is now sought after as an asset for teams that are looking to strengthen their line-ups.

2) Nitish Rana

It is improbable that Nitish Rana, an excellent middle-order batter, will be retained by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the upcoming mega auction. The future of Rana at KKR becomes doubtful with the emergence of new talents and arrangements in the roster.

Yet, his vast experience and long list of achievements make him a tempting target for other franchises, such as CSK. Rana as an anchor in the innings and the ability to change the gears when necessary is a win-win situation for any team.

His potential to team up with youngsters like Rizvi and Rachin promises a balanced and powerful CSK middle order. Rana, being a veteran campaigner in the IPL, provides steadiness and leadership to the middle order, a very important quality for CSK to have in the upcoming season, which is why he is a good asset for them in the IPL in the second season.

3) Dhruv Jurel

Dhruv Jurel, the wicketkeeper-batsman who hails from India, sizzles as one of the viable selections for the playing XI of CSK in terms of steadiness and finishing power. Though his retention is still in the air, the inclusion of him in the mega auction could prove to be an expensive affair.

Nevertheless, the mega auction form, focused on building a team until the next cycle, takes care of instant financial consequences. Jurel’s feature of comfortably blending into the playing XI and delivering as an assuring finisher makes him a very viable option for CSK.

In addition, the potential of MS Dhoni’s departure creates a vacuum – Jurel’s presence can help in bridging the gap. His experience and maturity in critical moments enable him to deal with crucial situations, which makes him a valuable asset in the CSK squad. Jurel becomes an alternative for ensuring the team’s equilibrium and competitiveness in future seasons.

4) Liam Livingston

The possibility of Liam Livingstone being up for grabs in the mega auction is a mouthwatering prospect for CSK. His status with Punjab Kings (PBKS) remains ambiguous but is a good fit for CSK’s needs. Livingstone being a power-hitting batsman able to hit sixes at his will gives CSK the much-required firepower in the batting order. Additionally, he is a good spin bowler, which provides diversity in its arsenal and adds another dimension to the bowlers on the team.

In case Moeen Ali is released, Livingstone can readily fill up the open spot doing justice to the team’s dynamics with his all-round skills. His flexibility to play in any position and deliver important overs of spin bowling are attributes that could be precious for CSK’s campaign for IPL 2025. Having two-way dominance in the game, Livingstone is surely one of the deserving players to be included in CSK’s retention name.

5) Mitchel Marsh

In 2025, Mitchell Marsh becomes a very attractive option for CSK’s roster as he has a valuable amount of experience and leadership qualities. The current T20 captain of Australia, Marsh’s credentials are indicative of the quality cricketer that he is. His possible presence adds an interesting twist to CSK’s combination and is the return of an Australian talent to the franchise following the likes of Josh Hazelwood and Shane Watson.

The ease with which Marsh can be fitted into the XI, probably at a number three position that matters the most, strengthens the CSK batting lineup greatly. Additionally, his overall abilities, followed by quality medium-pace bowling and swing upfront, bring extra flexibility and breadth to the team’s set-up.

Marsh comes across as a player with the required temperament and set of skills to deliver under pressure and thrive in big-match scenarios and with a record of such performances, this makes him a significant player for CSK in IPL 2025.

While IPL 2025 is lurking in the shadows with just 8-9 months left before the game starts, doubt and enthusiasm are in the air. Even though discussions and assumptions about possible player acquisitions and team tactics are numerous, one should keep in mind that the cricket environment changes all the time. Every prediction made concerning player retention, auctions and team composition dynamics remains highly speculative until the event is upon us, no matter what these actual factors may be.

With the expectations of IPL 2025 at the doorstep, there is a need to enjoy the present while the cricketing action is alive. Though we wait with bated breath for the mega auction and the ensuing excitement of IPL cricket, let’s also throw our support behind our national team as they prepare for the ICC T20 World Cup. While the high of T20 cricket is on, we come together to cheer for India and celebrate the game and not wait for the IPL extravaganza to mesmerize us again.
