Former India captain and CSK star MS Dhoni recently revealed at an event that he is still thinking about his retirement plans from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 41-year-old Dhoni explained that his decision will be focused on the larger benefit of CSK, as he is deeply connected to the franchise. His retirement considerations will also take into account the updated IPL retention rules. Dhoni has been a pivotal part of CSK, leading them to a joint-record five IPL titles, which are all part of his illustrious MS Dhoni IPL records.
The topic of Dhoni’s retirement has been debated ever since he stepped down from the CSK captaincy role ahead of IPL 2024, handing over the duties to Ruturaj Gaikwad. After CSK won their fifth IPL title in 2023, Indian cricket fans began anticipating that the 2024 season would be Dhoni’s last. However, Dhoni has yet to disclose any strong details about his retirement, leaving the door open for yet another season in 2025.
“…That is the ultimate goal”: MS Dhoni on his retirement plan from the IPL
“There’s a lot of time left for the franchises and management to decide on the retention rules and everything. So when all of it is decided, then we will take a decision. We don’t have the ball in our court yet. When the regulations are decided, then we will be able to take a call. At the end of the day, we will have to make a decision that is best for CSK, and that is the ultimate goal,” Dhoni said at the event.
Under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy, CSK failed to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs. Despite this, Gaikwad received praise for his first leadership stint with the franchise. Throughout the season, there were numerous occasions where Dhoni, one of the esteemed CSK captains, was seen giving his guidance to Ruturaj during matches. This mentorship has only heightened the anticipation around Ruturaj potentially becoming the long-term captain of the franchise.
