Born in Pune on January 31, 1997, the 27-year-old Ruturaj displayed his sportsmanship spirit in most matches since his entry into the cricket world at an early age.

Ruturaj started playing with a leather ball at the young age of 5. By the age of 11, he was already practicing at the Vengsarkar Cricket Academy. Which provided him the platform to make his mark at the Maharashtra U14 and later U16 teams as well.

In an interview, Gaikwad mentioned the pivotal role the academy has played in his life. “I would like to also thank my academy, Vengsarkar Cricket Academy, which is, located in the PCMC (Pimpri-Chinchwad) area,” Ruturaj says.

“I’ve been there since the last 9-10 years, right since the age of 11. They’ve always been supportive and encouraging. Even today, they oblige whenever I request them to let me practice.”

He is an Indian international cricketer playing for the Maharashtra team in domestic cricket and for the CSK (Chennai Super Kings) in the IPL. He made his international debut in July 2021 against Sri Lanka for the Indian team. In the Asian Games in 2022, Ruturaj was selected as the Captain of the Indian team.

Ruturaj has had a steady career in cricket, showing this trait since the early days of his career when, in the 2010 Cadence Trophy, he scored 63 (71) against Mumbai’s MIG Cricket Club for Varroc Vengskar Academy.

Again in 2015, Ruturaj scored an impressive 306 runs at the Maharashtra Invitational Tournament in partnership with 522 runs with Vinay, his teammate. A steady cricketer, Ruturaj made his List A debut in the 2016-17 Vijay Hazare Trophy (on February 25, 2017) for Maharashtra. His performance in this trophy merits particular reference as he scored 444 runs along with a 63.42 average in 7 matches. Ruturaj created a record by scoring 3 half-centuries and one century, thus being rated as the third-highest run-getter in Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2016-17.

As years passed, Ruturaj kept showing his maturity in one game after another. No wonder, he played for India A, India B, India Blue, Maharashtra, and India U-23. In October 2018, Ruturaj was named in India B-squad for Deodhar Trophy-2018-19 and included in India’s team for the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in December 2018.

Ruturaj entered the cricket world at the early age of just 13, making his debut by joining the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s Varroc Dilip Vengskar Academy in Thergaon in Pimpri Chinchwar of Pune.

In 2021, he was the leading run-scorer in the IPL Season and also captained Maharashtra in the 2021 Mushtaq Ali Trophy, scoring a hefty 259 runs in five matches, averaging 51.80, including three fifties at a strike rate of 150.71.

Continuing with the tempo of his very good performance, Ruturaj became one of the top scorers in the tournament in Vijay Hazare Trophy-2021-22, scoring 400 and equaling the score record of Virat Kohli for getting the maximum hundreds in a single Vijay Hazare tournament and securing 600 runs in the tournament for Maharashtra.

In the 2022-23 Vijay Hazare Trophy, Ruturaj created another history during the 2nd Quarter Final match between Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. He created the distinction of being the first batter to hit seven sixes in an over (one off a no-ball) in all forms of cricket.

In the Final of Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022-23, Ruturaj achieved a 108-run knock against Saurashtra and created a record for the most centuries by any player in this trophy’s history (12).

A Pune-based franchise of the MPL (Maharashtra Premier League) inked an agreement with Ruturaj for three years on a payment term of Rs. 14.8 crore. It also announced him as the captain for the inaugural season.

Ruturaj’s International Journey

Known internationally as an ace cricketer, Ruturaj was named in India’s ODI squad in June 2021 and the Twenty20 International squad for the series against Sri Lanka. Making his debut in T20I on July 28, 2021, against Sri Lanka, Ruturaj was included in India’s ODI squad in December 2021 for the South African series.

Acknowledged as one of the most dependable cricketers of India, Ruturaj was named in India’s ODI squad in January 2022 against West Indies and in June 2022, he scored his maiden T20I century against South Africa.
